Thanks for this video, and all your videos. Yes, we all err and we all learn from our own errors and those of others. Video helps present both success and error. You are teaching good techniques and this video shows the benefit of default energy saving techniques for when the engine doesn't provide the margin we expect.

Thanks so much for posting.

There's a fine line between pushing yourself to become a better pilot, but not going too far too fast, and accidentally crossing that line. Thanks for showing us your line in this video. I believe each of us has our own line to be aware of. Obviously, you have been pushing yourself up to the line and become a very capable pilot because of it.

All your videos are great and much appreciated. Thanks for bringing us along and allowing us to learn.

I enjoy all your videos, but this one struck a chord with me... We've all been there, and done that at some time during our flying career.

Harry Myers and Mason M. Roberts, in their book Human Engineering quoted an anonymous source: "Learn from the mistakes of others — you can't live long enough to make them all yourself." Never more true than when referring to aviation.

But I prefer the Will Rogers version of the same sentiment: “There are three kinds of men: the one who learns by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest of them who have to pee on an electric fence for themselves.”

I aspire to be in the first or second group, but far too often find myself in the third group...

I like this, a lot. This day in age where social media has driven everyone to portray perfection in everything, and where in aviation we see nothing but heavily edited videos of perfectly stuck STOL landings, it's nice to be reminded that even the very experienced guys have the occasional clatter ass landing.

I think this is why pilots dont want to post their errors.

OMG- these comments are so ridiculous. I see similar statements on Facebook after a crash. Dumb comments that show very little understanding of human error. When I watched your video - I chuckled. I have landed then taxied into mud getting stuck (at Tieton), dropped it in to short when heavy or just trying to land super short, and I had my own little mishap at Dick's ski-jump. The video is awesome and very educational. We are pushing the envelope in our birds not just flying between mile long paved strips. I have two friends who both are new to flying and own 182P models. I show your videos to them mostly to demonstrate their plane's capability - but also how to safely fly their airplanes into non-conventional airports and do it safely.

Again a nicely produced video. Around the 05:30 you can clock the G meter on the Nanchang undersh*t as we call them this side of the Atlantic - only around 4G so quite soft by some student standards :)

The OP mentions minima, it would be great to get a sense what SOP minima he has designed for himself.

Avoidance reduces exposure, and experience. Default energy management is so stingy with energy, so reluctant to waist kinetic in more than necessary climb on takeoff, so unwilling to give up power by closing the throttle on power/pitch approach, so cognizant of down drainage and orograraphic lift and thermal lift that this extra banked energy is a built in minima.

There was a pipeline patrol pilot in a Cardinal who touched down on the right of way asleep, twice! The second time he spread the gear and broke his ankles. Wife and insurance company convinced him to quit.

I guess I should have had a camera going last week, when I caught a rock with my tailwheel on a low pass. I had been out all morning, landing many different new sites, and when I got to this one I let my guard down as I had landed it once before, to watch the eclipse. Unlike the days previous new LZ's, where I really paid attention....I snoozed my way into this, not until I was within a hair of being fully committed, did I note the rocks, poured the coal to it and with all three tires off the ground outclimbed the ridge, until one rock smacked my tailwheel. Not an UP force like a hard landing, but a BACKWARDS force. Trashed the wheel bent bolts etc., still flyable but I will be practicing my wheel landings until I get together with my welder to make things right again back there (actually better, we have some mods in mind). One thing I did learn quite some time ago, and what helped me again this time, when landing upslope, if you even start to think about adding a bit of power, ADD A LOT OF IT, RIGHT NOW!

I liked the landing at 2:50, you got all there was to give out of that one!

You make some good points with that video, no matter how much time we have flying there is always something to learn.
I did notice the bloke in the Avid derivative taking off from the sandbar didn't taxi right back to where he could of had a longer run for take off.
Was there some reason like the area that appeared ok was not suitable?
You make one of the most valuable points in flying that we can (Should) learn from others and our own mistakes.
