BCP'ers to Oshkosh - Poll

We should try and meet up at Oshkosh, en route if we can. I'll be in vintage camping and weather depending - am going to try and depart the front range area of Northern Colorado on Saturday and overnighting in eastern SD or western Iowa. I plan to be there the whole week - maybe a night or two over at New Holstein.

Anyone coming from the west, perhaps we can meet up along the way. I'll be flying low and slow - like others. Perhaps we can meet up along the I90 corridor or somesuch. Yankton, SD?

Here's a rough idea of my route.

I'm in for all of the above. I can work on a venue and sponsors for a meetup if you like.

Hell yeah!! Though I might be a traitor and fly a Banana up there instead of the Citab..

Would still be interested in a meet up :)

I'd like to meet some of you folks, too. I have a lot to learn before I take a trip out west...

I'll be there all week.

Re: BCP'ers to Oshkosh - Poll

I'm planning on going, but I always plan to arrive OSH on Saturday before the show.

Get there on Sunday and vintage camping will have you so far south that you'll need a ride to get to the tram stop.

There's usually some folks that gather around Spearfish before the show....

Yankton is where I bought this cub, nice airport.

I am going. Plan to hang out and fly out of McCall for a couple days then head north. Sand Point, Glacier and then down the Missouri through the Breaks. Then north along the boarder over to Superior. Last night before OSH at Appleton. Arrive OSH Sunday morning. Not able to do Vintage camping in Cub. Mike

Soy - I will be there. You know where to find me, under the big Yellow Smiley face BEER balloon at S.O.S. brothers.
Way to early to see how things will pan out for how long I will be there.

Re: BCP'ers to Oshkosh - Poll

I plan right now (weather permitting) to leave Saturday morning and get into OSH that afternoon. My usual route is Greeley to Grand Island (good sandwich shop there) to Dubuque (good restaurant there, too), then on to OSH. Last year I went to Luverne MN at Marty's invitation (one of the BCPers here, fuel discount and free lunch which was great!), then on to LaCrosse, then to OSH. Either route is about 755 miles, give or take, and roughly 6.1 to 6.5 flight hours in my airplane typically. I'll be there the whole week, planning to leave before the airshow starts on the final Sunday.

For those who haven't made the flight before, several thoughts:
*Download, print, and have in the airplane the current NOTAM. It's usually available on the Airventure website in May. READ THE NOTAM.
*Do NOT attempt to go in without the NOTAM!!!!!
*I've been told to avoid Wisconsin Dells as being a "collecting point" for a lot of incomers. Since I haven't flown to it, I can't verify that.
*I have several acquaintances who overnight somewhere so that they can fly into OSH in the morning.
*If you fly in or out during the week, the airport is closed for a time before until about half an hour after the airshow.
*There's a window from after the airshow until the airport is closed for the night--at 7 p.m. CDT. NO NIGHT OPS. Timing can be pretty critical--I've been the last one in twice!
*IFR in is very, very difficult to arrange--the reservation system is tough to use, whether by phone or by computer.
*From Ripon to Fiske, do NOT use the GPS--follow the railroad track.
*If you haven't practiced flying at 90 knots indicated for awhile, do so.
*Sounds like heresy to say it to BCPers, but practice spot landings a bit, too. It isn't just the Cirri and Bos which miss the spots by hundreds, sometimes thousands, of feet.

I have camped at the North 40, at the South 40 (sometimes known as North Fond Du Lac :)), and in Vintage, each several times. I've enjoyed all 3, and except one year when I was in the second to last row in the South 40, it's always been convenient to the shuttles and trams. That year, rains washed out the road and the busses kept getting stuck, so they had to move the turn-around effectively shortening the access road.

As for where and when to meet up, I'm pretty flexible. It's vacation, after all!

Re: BCP'ers to Oshkosh - Poll

One other piece of advice: Arrive at Ripon with lots of extra fuel (that's why I figure my last leg as only an hour or so, but with full fuel when I take off from my last stop). Fuel at OSH isn't all that bad compared to other places, but it's possible to be held over Green Lake or Rush Lake. The longest I've been held was about 35 minutes over Green Lake, but I've heard horror stories about an hour of going round and round. It's nice not to worry about fuel!

Re: BCP'ers to Oshkosh - Poll

I discovered Viroqua, WI 2 years ago when I was weathered down after departing Oshkosh. Beautiful grass strip, cheap gas, and a courtesy car into town.

http://skyvector.com/airport/Y51/Viroqua-Municipal-Airport

But with only 12g of gas - I need the closest stopping point I can get to give me some reserve before flying into the hornets nest. Maybe a day early will be less traffic - another good idea. I want a good spot close to the flight line so I can watch the show in the shade of my wing.

Oh..... and I can't practice 90mph (or 90kts) indicated - not even on a good day. ;-)

WilgaBeast, if you can organize a venue and some sponsors that would be fantastic. I may have a sponsor as well. Otherwise we'll meet up at the SOS brothers and get sloshed w/ 29singleSpeed. Or we can sneak beers in and meet up at one of our planes.

Sneak beer in? Heck, the cooler takes precedence over everything but the tent. The Red Barn SELLS beer on site now, and last year, they even had some decent beer in addition to the usual Bud Light.

Drop by my space, and drink a good AK or MT beer :D

Re: BCP'ers to Oshkosh - Poll

Wow a lot happens in 2 years. I was last there in 2012 - way out in the north 40 - felt like I was in a dry county - didn't see any alcohol for sale anywhere inside the venue - hence the popup tent bars outside the grounds such as the the big happy face at SOS.

I think they need to crack the beers early and often - they're going to need the extra money to pay the FAA controllers. lol

Lookin' forward to seein' you then...

Please make sure you vote 'yes' if you're both attending OSH14 and if you want to have a 'meetup' type event.

I am working on getting a vendor to sponsor the event and venue. Need approx attendee numbers.

Re: BCP'ers to Oshkosh - Poll

OSH has a bush plane thing going on this year. One of the promo pieces I saw was pushing the STOL aspect. One more reason to go.

If anyone wants to fly along the northern route from Sand Point please let me know. Maybe hook up for slow trip and Sunday arrival. Mike

Re: BCP'ers to Oshkosh - Poll

My home airport is about 90 miles NW from OSH, identifier KRRL.

We have 100LL at a good market price, self serve. Well also have a parallel grass strip next to 25-07.

We have a courtesy car that you can use for food or supply runs to town.

All are welcome.
