Belly pods

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: Belly pods

So who has a pod I can get field approved on my early 180? Anyone figured this out yet?

Unfortunately, it's not that easy.....

Re: Belly pods

Talked to bob. Super nice guy. He has some guys that have got it done that he's gonna put me in touch with. Tony has been super nice as well but I'm leaning towards bobs. Like in the picture of the blue plane. It's same size except for depth. Little shallower. I like that an the looks of it a little better. Pm me I can tell you the price. Pretty good I thought!

Re: Belly pods

I believe these are some of Bob's pods... one is on a 1954 skywagon... so I guess the dream is possible.

How about a cargo pod for your RV-10?

Re: Belly pods

We have a Piatt pod, it is fantastic.

It took a couple of days for the initial install, and now it’s about 1/2 hour for seasonal install/removal. Four sets of skis, poles, snowboards, engine cover, wing covers, extension cord, shovel, snowshoes….

It does affect cooling, cowl flaps are open even in the winter. It only slows it down a few MPH.

Re: Belly pods

I have a Firmin Pod also. I couldn't be without it! We spend time on the local islands off the New England coast. Great for salty spearfishing gear, fish, clamming rakes, beach chairs or whatever. Like Aqua said, it's on or off in about 30 minutes and no big deal once you have a system. Mine pretty much stays on all the time. I have done speed tests with it on then off and didn't realize any difference. It increases the utility of an airplane dramatically.
I would like to find one for my 205 in any condition, if anyone knows of one for sale.

Re: Belly pods

Question… aren’t external loads loads specifically allowed in Alaska without a field approval? Wouldn’t a cargo pod fall into that category just like a lumber rack… I’m thinking of building one for my PA20 using the original rear gear leg mounts and new rear float mounts.

I'm guessing here, but.....An external load, as defined in the Alaska Region policy on carriage of external loads on fixed wing aircraft is basically a "load" not an "installation".

It's pretty clear that a cargo pod is a piece of "installed equipment", not just a temporary "load".

Another example might be tires.....hang a set of monster mudders on there, and.....etc.

So, I'd definitely have a chat with the FSDO before I went too far down that rat hole. But, if it works, definitely let us know....

The "CS & L Theory" aligns my thinking with MTV on this one but the regulating agencies often fail to apply this theory. As he's said its well worth a phone call for a regulatory definition of an external load.
