Biggest 8 x 6.00 tire? smallest 7x 6.00 tire?

Need to replace tires.
Tried fitting an Air Trac 7x6.00 and it didnt fit the heavy duty fork I have, barely , but it didnt work.
Bought a monster re thread 6x6.00 which is bigger than the one I got.

Wanted to see if the smallest 7x6.00 will fit, so if anyone knows this info is welcomed.

For the mains I need to replace my 8x6.00s.
Anyone knows the widest largest ones?

Dont wanna go to 8.50s if I cannot put an 8 on the nose fork.

Re: Biggest 8 x 6.00 tire? smallest 7x 6.00 tire?

When i purchased my first 310 nose fork it came with a wheel and a tire. It had a 700x6 on it there was enough clearance between the side wall and the fork for a piece of bologna. Never ran it but ended up putting on a 600 and put 700's on the mains. I think the tire that came with the fork was an Air Hawk 6 ply

Thanks Tim, I think the 310 fork is a bit bigger than the 182 heavy duty one if Im not mistaken.

The early 310, Heavy 205, 206,182,172 were the strap aluminum like this. Image

The later version were a forged fork. The early forks (strap like mine )will take some 700x6 tires. The later forged will only take a 600x6

Not sure witch one you have.

AirHawk 7.00 has a more "square" profile and will fit in the above pictured nose fork. I tried the AirTrac first and it rubbed. The AirHawk 7.00 will fit, just barely.

I have a large set of calipers and the 700x6 Air Hawks on my mains measure a skosh over 6 7/8. I measured my nose fork and it looks like you would have a skosh under 1/16 of an inch clearance on each side.

I couldn't help thinking your question sounded familiar....

The AirHawk 7.00 will get you the aforementioned slice of Bologna type clearance in the HD fork. I'm sure some other brands will as well, but I stopped looking after the AirHawk fit.

The pic of the hd fork looks like it was added on incorrectly. Tube needs to be cut down and scissors need to go directly to fork. Otherwise it defeats a lot of the HD fork idea.

And what does it defeat.

Re: Biggest 8 x 6.00 tire? smallest 7x 6.00 tire?

Law of levers. Larger front tire, heavier fork - higher load. Longer "lever" to the firewall with a long strut tube take less force to bend firewall.
A 5x5 with a cast aluminum fork vs a steel fork with a 6x6 considerable difference. Plus not having the support of the scissors right on the fork. I have not seen any cessna parts manual with the HD fork on that strut tube setup. Check out airglas's HD fork install instructions, same procedure applies when replacing a light duty with a hd cessna fork.

I see what you mean, the collar assembly is missing, just found out its still attached to my old fork.
Will remove it and placed where is supposed to go.
Good catch, thank you.

Not sure there is a proper way. Done as per field approval. I need the prop clearance at my ranch strip. I have a pretty good bump to taxi over. Oh and by the way, on the 56 182 the nose strut is about 4" longer so when you cut off a few inches it is going to end up longer than yours.

Re: Biggest 8 x 6.00 tire? smallest 7x 6.00 tire?

I have just never seen a HD fork swapped onto that Light duty style of tube directly before. My 59 182 originally had the light duty with the collar scissor mount, cast aluminum fork, 5x5. It was at some later date changed to the HD fork, no collar, scissor mounted to fork. (optional HD as per cessna manual) Just like motoave's picture. When i bought the plane I swapped my airglas fork to it with 8x8 and 850 mains. The Cessna fork is almost as heavy as the airglass, so If i was converting I would follow the airglas instructions. nice pictorial on BCP. I guess you could mount it anyway you want if it was field approved. Potential problem maybe if your A&P did the install incorrectly, but stated in the application that he installed HD Cessna fork as per option in parts manual, and no inspector actually looked at it.

As I said, the 56 is considerably taller than the 59. I had a 59 with the fork set up like yours. If I did that to my 56 then it would be taxiing in a very nose down attitude. I guess I could take a big rosebud torch and heat up the mains to level it out. I will try to get that field approval.

Re: Biggest 8 x 6.00 tire? smallest 7x 6.00 tire?

Fair enough. There is a 4" difference in the main gear height between the two. Might sit nice with 850's all around, but that is not cheap
