Booked My OSH Hotel

Pumped!

I just booked my hotel for OSH on Orbitz. Staying at the Motel 6 right in town. I cant believe that I was able to get a room. I have tried for the past 3 years to get something in town w/ no luck. Gonna stay for 4 nights. Plan is (God willing) to fly the Skywagon in. Hotel is close enough we can walk over. Best part of it is the rooms are refundable up until that day if I wanted so perhaps I might camp for a night or two... Good deal! Room was $256/night for two beds.

Looks like they have just a few left there as well as some right at the Motel 8 (even closer, but twice the cost.)

I suggest anyone else wanting a room to pounce now.

Re: Booked My OSH Hotel

Sweet! You'll have a great time.

I've done it three times, twice from New England and once from Oregon. Camped each time though. I have pretty vivid memories of each arrival. :D

The best arrival I had was one year where I ended up landing on parallel runways with the Ford Tri motor off my wing. Pretty cool.

Have fun!

Re: Booked My OSH Hotel

That'll be a great time. We've stayed at the Motel 8 on the NW corner of the runway several times and it's always a blast. Close to Friar Tucks.. Charcoal Pit...mmmmmmm.

Conveniently enough, the two years we did that was during Sloshkosh and Frostkosh. I've had pretty good luck with weather when I've camped.

We were talking to the manager of the place and he said they breakeven (and probably plus some) for the year from the week of AirVenture alone. Which is probably good because I don't see them making too much money in that spot with the Hilton right next door..

Crap now you have me thinking of Oshkosh, thanks a lot!!!!!!

Tragically, ATXCitab (Hank Sasser) perished in a crash in August 2014. He was a great guy and will be missed. -Z

You'll miss the best part of the Oshkosh experience if you don't camp under a wing, especially a wing of that beautiful airplane.

Vintage Camping is where it's at. I'd cancel those reservations, and find a good tent.

See you there!

I agree. Also, try and get over to new Holstein at least Wednesday for the short field contest and pig roast.

Re: Booked My OSH Hotel

I'm thinking of a large tarp over the wing. Maybe one on both sides. How does that work out? Seems like it would kill two birds with one stone. Place to sleep and kill lift.

Re: Booked My OSH Hotel

You can almost count on at least one big storm during the week--a tarp over the wing wouldn't offer much protection.

Re: Booked My OSH Hotel

Spent more than my share of nights on the ground, and will again. I'll be camping at Fun N Sun w/ the Wagon, but the week of OSH I want to be able to take a nice hot shower and private sh#t after a long ass day. Plus my dad always goes with me and at 70, he wants a nice soft bed. We will be mac'n in our AC hotel room at night. 8)

Every year, I see folks do this. Almost always "well used" planes. If you value your planes finish, I wouldn't go there. Thunderstorms are a way of life at OSH, and I wouldn't want a tarp draped over a wing in a big blow.

Not being unkind here, but tell your dad he's being a wimp, and that another 70 year old said so! :)

I like camping at OSH. I sleep on a Roll-a-cot with a thicker Thermarest on it, and I sleep as well as if I were in my Sleep Comfort bed at home. My tent is well ventilated, and I hang a fan from the peak of it--very comfortable. There is something about the camaraderie of camping with fellow aviators that makes camping in the North 40, or Vintage, or the South 40, or even North Fon du Lac (the far, far south South 40) something special. I have invites from various folks from all over the country whom I've met at OSH that if I'm in their area, I have a place to stay. So far as I can recall, there's only a couple of guys who'd just as soon shoot me as have me visit. :)
