Zzzz, That's just balmy! Wait until it gets real cold!! LOL

I've got a picture somewhere of my thermometer with the mercury (whatever it is these days) in the very bottom of the bulb. It was below the lowest number on there. Been a few years ago...but it was a tad bit chilly.

That's an interesting factoid. Back when ALL thermometers were tubes with a bit of fluid in them (most use alcohol now), the coldest temperatures ever recorded were essentially the very bottom of the bulb on the thermometer.

More recently, digital devices have been developed that are not limited by fluid in a bulb. NWS friend of mine in Alaska said he thought we might start seeing some new records on the low end, due to more accurate recording devices.

I don't know if that has actually happened, but......this could be the winter.

Re: Brrrrrr!

Looks like we are getting off easy compared to most of you guys. 13 this morning, 5-10” of snow overnight with temps rising to near 40 tomorrow and heavy rain, then a flash freeze with gusts to 60 and down to zero tomorrow night with a few inches of snow on top. Time to make sure the generators are working. Be careful out there!

Re: Brrrrrr!

We had -55 at the cabin this morning....but the neighbor had -58. High of -7, and back down to -23 as I type this. Glad we had a good "hay year"!

Wow, big swing for the day. “Official” for Belgrade ( the airport here) was -45. Highest I saw today was -23. Close to -30 last I looked.

Drove to do some stuff today. Halfway through, I had to air up my tires. Big fun.

Re: Brrrrrr!

It had warmed up to -8F by the time I got my pickup started but by then I was out of fun time and had to get after my to-do list. I thought I might go flying tomorrow just went out to move my pickup so I could plug it in again but it’s already froze up. Ugh. I’d never make it if I lived somewhere that was actually really cold…more likely I just wouldn’t own a diesel pickup.

So, no flying tomorrow. Perhaps next week when it’s a bit warmer.

My low tire light came on yesterday too. All four tires were about 6 or 7 pounds low.

Re: Brrrrrr!

Receiving snow and ice since November. My first experience with moderate ice on a boat was last night. Really scary to me. I have only seen this type of weather on the Discovery Channel or BBC. Very glad to have a super strong diesel heater! Getting ready to go skiing in the Cascades…

Temperature: 30F, Wind: 20-25kts Easterly.

PS it was 80F at my apartment in Honolulu with light Trades.

Probably should add Westerners to the alert. I really don't know you guys handle this ridiculously cold weather. Here in Oregon - West of the cascades it's cold - about 21 F today with some snow and ice on the ground. I can't image what it feels like with -30 F and wind chill to boot.

My cold weather flying operations is essentially non existent. I don't start my engine below 35 F. Don't have a Tanis heater or cowl blanket. It is one of the things I love about living west of the Cascades - it just doesn't get that cold around here. Lots of experience flying with wind and rain though.

I believe warm air is moving in tomorrow. :D

Re: Brrrrrr!

I was born and raised right here and always heard the "old timers" tell of -50's, but never saw it before yesterday. I'd seen plenty of -40's, but that's usually in late January or February.
Had to run into town to pick up family tonight, and it was -4 when we left...about half way in, it started to rain. Nice wet thick mist.... cars all over the place, stopped and trying to get their windshields clear enough to see out of! Defrost on high and thankful we had good antifreeze in the washer fluid! I've seen that before, but usually about 30 degrees. I'd sure have hated to be in the air!
I'm just gonna stay home and work in the hangar!

Sounds like some of you down south are having a worse time than I am in the arctic! We had our -40C/F limit yesterday but otherwise have been hovering (heh) around -36C/-33F. Windchill was down to -53C/-63F though which is certainly not fun.

Re: Brrrrrr!

The previously beautiful snow looks like it was scoured and a pine tree exploded everywhere. It's nasty here today, but it's sunny.

Re: Brrrrrr!

I'm actually surprised that there aren't more trees down and/or broken. The snow load on them is very high. I have many trees leaning across my driveway and had to use the plow on the tractor to 'shake' the snow off so I could get down the driveway. I had a big 4" diameter branch bust right where I normally park. Had just moved the vehicle to plow and made a pass through with the tractor....When I cam back around, there was a huge branch laying right where I had just plowed!! I was very lucky! No smash car or tractor.

Re: Brrrrrr!

Two days ago it was 50 degrees F above 5000 feet and 0 degrees F below 5000 feet. This is what a snow mobiler looked like when he got back to the truck.

That’s where I’m heading, this is bullshit…deep freeze then snow then deep freeze. The older we get the less tolerant of it we seem to be.
