Burning Man 2015 - 88NV

Who's going to Burning Man this year? In 2015 it's August 30 - September 7 and it is sold out.

I'll be coming from Seattle for the 8th time and flying my pacer.

What happens if you land without tickets ? Are there things to see without tickets ?
Places to camp nearby?

You'd have an easier time crashing a party at Hitler's fortress during WWII.

Just read the whole thing. Holy crap! That's like flying into Shanghai, China - but with skydivers in the area!

I'd still like to see it some day. I have a few friends that go every year.

I flew in last year. It was definitely the most interesting assembly of humanity that I have ever seen. Bring the good blue masking tape to seal up every hole in your plane. The dust wants to go with you when you leave.

If your mind is open, the event is definitely worth a visit some time. If your mind is closed, and you have it in your head how others should live their lives it's probably best to stay away.

Re: Burning Man 2015 - 88NV

In the past, I've asked what Burning Man was all about, and was told that if I have to ask I won't understand.
I just surfed the burningman.org website, and have to admit I still don't get it. So maybe they were right.

I've been, and I can't say that I know what it's all about. I do know that it happens every year and that a lot of people put a LOT of effort in to organizing it, their creations and contributions. There is plenty to see and plenty to do if you are curious. It takes a lot of effort to get there.

There are definitely a few creepy folks around, but it is mostly good-natured people out to have a good time. The things that I witnessed are: art, music, human expression, an air of love, awesome party scene, pretty girls, nudity, outlandish costumes, new age spiritual ceremony, meditation, yoga. Guaranteed to take you out of your comfort zone, but dramatically expand your comfort zone if that is available to you.

This is a pretty good look:

I'm taking my C205 (if I can get the !@#$ manifold pressure issue sorted out). Last year was my first.

That video convinced me! Time to dig out my old leather jockstrap, sequined mask, and form-fitted mini-xmas-lights body harness!

Then again....maybe not.

Re: Burning Man 2015 - 88NV

I've been a few times. And flew my RV-4 in once. Flying in was the best way to get there and leave! No waiting in lines to get in or out.

Personally I think the art is best best thing about BM. Lots of large structures and cool things to see. The music I could do without.

Re: Burning Man 2015 - 88NV

I'm an old 'Stick in the Mud" of the first order I guess. Forty years ago I would have made a B-line for something like this but I just don't have the mental stamina to handle it any more. Somebody mentioned a "Closed Mind" linked to enjoyment of this sort of thing. I really don't think my mind is closed up so much as filled up. In 1967 I saw Jimi Hendrix at Winterland in San Francisco. That was weird. There might have been modern chemistry involved. I don't recall. At the Carousel Ballroom one night I saw Chicago Transit Authority, Albert King, and B.B. King all on the same bill. There was a naked couple engaged in sexual intercourse at the back of the hall right there as you entered the ballroom. That was weird.

I think I'd rather watch it on TV you know? Put it on pause to go use the bathroom for instance. Take a nap.

When you get right down to it, I'm thinking I'll go to Scottsdale next spring and spend a couple weeks watching two or three live baseball games a day at all those spring training camps. That would be a gas. I've still never made it to Oshkosh. Maybe that one too. Burning man? Not so much.

They should change the name of Oshkosh from "AirVenture" to "Burning Fuel", since it is indeed the aviation equivalent of Burning Man.

Far be it for me to advise anyone on lifestyle and closed-mindedness.... but if you love airplanes and you haven't been to Oshkosh, do that first, long before you go out to Burning Man.

If you go to OSH and miss out on Burning Man, come visit me here in LA and I'll take you into West Hollywood where you can see 2/3 of Burning Man on any given Saturday evening....
