Bush flying simulator anyone?

Anyone like simulators?

I do have Prepar 3D and use it quite a bit to explore places I will fly later, also fly IL2 WWII simulator (lots of fun)

This one coming up should be fun.

Re: Bush flying simulator anyone?

Yes.

I’m currently in love with Digital Combat Simulator (DCS World.) Flying the old WWII tailwheel stuff is just the most fun thing ever, especially with how much detail goes into the cockpits and all of the aircraft textures. There is a surprising amount of “bush” flying in the sim. I don’t think landing the P-51 off airport and on the sides of mountains counts as bush flying but if that floats your boat! Here is a nice vid of the K4 over Normandy. Flying starts about 3 mins in.

If you are using Prepar3D, check out some of the Carenado Aircraft. I especially like their Cessna A185F & Bush Expansion Pack. There was a physics mod for the airplane which made it even better especially with the bushwheels. If you get some good scenery such as any of the Orbx airports, you are golden.

Re: Bush flying simulator anyone?

I've always found MS Flight Sim to be too forgiving. I'd jump all over a sim that was a little more realistic in terms of flare and landing. I don't use it to prepare for trips because if it is a known strip I find Foreflight is adequate training and if it isn't a known strip there is no valuable coverage in Flight Sim.

Maybe one of the other programs is better?

I can't imagine starting from the ground up. MS Flight Sim has years of R&D and unimaginable amounts of code to support their game. I think X-plane is similar.

MS flight sim or Prepar 3D , the landings are not realistic at all, X plane a bit better.
I remember my first flying lesson thinking those sims really suck, its not even close to real life.
They are good for IFR procedures and with ORBX terrain add on, which is very realistic, good to fly to places before you go for the first time.

DCS WWII I have not tried but I see mixed reviews, how do you like it pilotryan?

Re: Bush flying simulator anyone?

I'm not much of a sim fan for VFR work--I have yet to see any non-full-motion sim that makes any realistic approach and landing. IFR procedures, OK, but not VFR.

However, full motion sims can be very realistic. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to ride as a passenger in the full motion sim at AIMS community college in Greeley, while my neighbor was taking their Beech 1900 course. The views out the windshield were slightly hokey, but at least semi-realistic, showing our take off from KGXY and a flight over the Denver metro area. Then with a little button pushing by the instructor, we were suddenly on long final into Boston Logan at night in the rain, and it became very realistic, complete with T-storm induced turbulence and a strong gusty crosswind. As my friend "touched down" in a bit of a crab as he misjudged the gusts, I was nearly thrown from my seat--it hadn't occurred to me to wear the seatbelt in a sim!

I've played around in Prepar3D with ORBX scenery and it is pretty impressive, visually anyhow. Especially some of their airport scenery for the PNW, like FHR, BVS, 74S....wow. I have their Pacific Northwest and Central Rockies regional area scenery, which has some of the Idaho strips such as Mile High and Dewey Moore customized, which is neat.

I liked FSX for learning procedures and IFR training. Definitely useful as a training aid.

It can be helpful for learning basic principles, but of course nothing beats actual flight time.

The orbx central Rockies have mike high and those strips on there. The a2a airplanes fly nicely

Those graphics are better than our brand new graphics in the company's latest 737 sim.

Is ORBX an actual simulator application, or just the scenery provider?

ORBX products are just scenery addons. They have an awesome demo area that includes the HQM airport over there in Washington. If you have an hour or two of free time, it is definitely worth checking out!

I LOVE IT. The module prices arent the cheapest, but it is so worth it. One of their dev partners Magnitude 3 LLC is devloping a Christian Eagle II for the platform. Which means that it’s not going to be strictly a military platform for long.
