Buying Used Cleco Fasteners - Okay or Not Okay ?

Image

Okay, they are not that expensive. But.

Is buying used cleco fasteners okay, and if so, what to look for?

I often see bags of used clecos for sale for pretty decent prices and was thinking hey...if I ever get close to deciding to build something, is buying used ok or not? I have seen used dimpling machines for sale for those folks who want flush rivets. A builder uses it and then sells it. Maybe the same for clecos?

Is there much that can go wrong with a cleco? I have bought bags of "old drill bits" and often they worked out just fine. I do remember one bag though. Man. Those drill bits would have trouble going through a styrofoam packing noodle.

So, what is the thought on buying used clecos?

If you know what type of Cleco's you want/will need and the plunger portion is not mashed in... then this seems perfectly OK to me...

Check that the "STEP" which locks them on the 'far side' is still sharp and square
NOT rounded from some one getting to zealous with their removal.

There is a bunch of formats - shapes - etc.

You wouldn't want many of my used clecos. Most of them are all gummed up with structural adhesive.

Buy them at a price where if 20% of them are "Stuck" or corroded or "sticky" you still got a good price.

An ultrasonic cleaner and a bath in Stoddard Solvent (or "Aviation Solvent"... avgas and a little oil) can do wonders. But if you soak or wash them in anything water-based you will have to bake them dry, or give 'em another soak in water-displacing fluid (thin LPS).

Anything you can do on a "batch soak" level may be worthwhile to bring them back from the junk box. Anything you have to do on an individual "piece" level is probably going to not be worth the time for regular spring type Clecos.

The previous comment about making sure they have good sharp grabbing corners (the edges not being worn round) is definitely the gospel.

I've bought hundreds of them used, and only had a very few that were no good. I'd say go for it! Get good pictures and I try to stay with Wedgelok brand.

Do report back if you actually buy some clecos.

I've bought almost all of my clecos used from eBay (large amounts), it's the best way. Chances are if they aren't going to work it will be from blown out holes and not worn Clecos. It really pays to buy used cleco clamps because they are pricey when bought new. Especially when you are buying large amounts.

As long as you're making progress on your build, then I don't think it matters much.
They are cheap by aviation standards, and I never wore any out.
The main thing is keeping that build going so you don't stall and never finish.

Exactly the reason I could never build my own airplane. I admire those whose patience, skill, and persistence far exceed mine.
