Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Good call, MTV! Many of you will probably recognize the stone wall and patio in the background. Very pleased with Ron's work. Especially happy with the pockets under the knees that I copied from my Volvo XC90. Also borrowed Greg's Atlee jump seat pattern, and embroidery. Did the grab handles and a couple other things as well. Got the frames powder coated at the same shop that does Atlee seats, so they're a perfect match for my jump seats.

Very nice! I wish I would have done those front pockets on mine, I bet they will be handy.

You better stuff some trash bags I the backs of those seats. First thing I did was wrestle a 100 lb moose quarter into the back of mine and now I have a big red stripe down the back of my new grey seat. But that leather might be easier to clean.

Re: C-170B/ IO-360M1B conversion: Complete!!

I realize that this is an expensive (but attractive) way to go, but those numbers are pretty impressive. I have been considering the 180hp 170B as a backcountry bird, but I recently saw several videos of a "210hp" 170B with the TSIO-360. It looked less than impressive. It made me think of this thread to see if there were any hard numbers on the short field capability.

Do you all think that a 170B with the 360 or IO360 with the Sportsman kit and VG's is capable of 500' at gross?

I think the 210hp IO-360 does good enough.

Yes, I can get 500' at gross, wth IO-360M1B, Sportsman, MT and 29's. (No VG's). But I'm guessing from your username that we're operating at very different DA's.

Then there's this:

The M1B is a new certified engine from Lycoming in 2002 and comes under new FAA rules that state that the engine has to put out 5% greater hp than published so it can maintain the rated hp thru it’s 2000 hr TBO. So it’s published hp is 180 but on the dyno it shows about 190hp.

You also have the option of roller tappets if you want them, and there are murmurings of a GW increase in development for the C170B/ IO-360M1B. I'm not holding my breath, but it would be a major consideration if it comes through.

Here is a video of another IO-360M1B 170B takeoff on floats.

My 1952 C-170 B with an O-360 Lycoming, an MT two bladed propeller, stock wing and VGs would regularly get airborne in less than 500 feet at anything even close to sea level DA and at gross weight. The new owner, who is a low time fixed wing guy, has described similar performance since he's owned the plane. They are good performing airplanes.

The O-360 A1A is the lightest of the available Lycoming engines for this airplane, and would be my choice, though those IO-360s are great engines, no doubt. Bring lots of cash.

Re: C-170B/ IO-360M1B conversion: Complete!!

That's what I'm trying to figure out - looking for a backcountry bird capable of two people minimum plus gear beyond what a Cub or variant can carry. But at what cost... A Maule would be nice but I'd want the -235 variant and that's a lot to feed.

Not tying to hijack the thread! Just trying to figure out where to put my money.

Re: C-170B/ IO-360M1B conversion: Complete!!

As soon as my daughter or Zzz can help me, i will post a pic of my "not grampa's 172"
Its a 1958 Fravel tail wheel conversion 172. I bought it with the fravel conversion done. When metal showed up in the oil, i could not make myself spend 20k plus and have the same engine so I added about 15k and now i have an 0-360 del air stc. As you all know, my plane is a 170b with a straight tail. In fact Cessna dam near went with that and called it the 170c but marketing the nose wheel won out. Good financial move for Cessna I went back and forth many times on how to go. I think DP did the ultimate for his ac with the engine he used and the MT. I was not really privy to the MT at the time i did mine or it might not even been stc's for mine then. But i ended up with two goals, as light as i can as un-expensive as i can (didnt say cheep as i can) It sits at just over 1300 with heavy tires.
The prop that was called for by stc, was kind of a combo cruise/power i think. I added 29" air streeks. old lighter 180 gear is part of the Fravel. It came with pponk gear stiffener and but i did the dave stoots suggestion of .053 on the floor instead of .035 dave says it completes the pponk. light weight starter/alternator odysey battery bas rear jump seats shed about net 30lbs sportsman leading edge. bas pull handles it climbs out at 1000fpm or better with full fuel and 500 lbs of men. cruises at 120 indicated but my gps seems to say faster most of the time. throttled back 8gph but have used 10 at 2450 rpm. its a much better plane now. i would love to see DP's light weight MT will do but i think you have to use a heavier engine for that. i am kind of 180hp fixed pitch-200hp plus add the blue knob kind of guy.

Thanks. Yeah, they came in a bit lighter. They replace a set of reclining seats, and the old pilot-side seat was height-adjustable, which for me was more of an annoyance than a feature. Getting rid of the Cessna metal seat springs in favor of tight-stretched fabric saves a few pounds. IIRC the old seats weighed in at 13 and 16 lbs, and the new ones are around 11-12 lbs each.

BTW, I have the old seats. If anyone would like them to fly with while doing their own seat refurb, you can have them for the cost of postage plus a donation to BCP.
