Take the seat belt out, take it home with you and soak it in bucket of hot water and dawn dishsoap overnight

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

I have found the preemptive strike to be most effective with air sickness. Most likely suspect should be flying in the right front seat. Sick sack should not be mentioned but should be open and near. If suspect quits wing leveling and communicating, place open sick sack on his lap.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

A sick sack's a pretty small target, and hard to hit in an emergency. Pretty small capacity too. I'd recommend a big old garbage bag- the sicky can stick their whole head in there and puke away. Everyone else will still be effected by the sound & smell, but at least there won't be much if any vomit in the cabin to clean up later.

Thanks for the pukey suggestions, gang. I'm going to grab some big drawtite trash bags for the plane next time I head to the store.

Thanks, fshaw!

I have gallon zip locks all over the plane. My 7-year old daughter gets sick all the time. I have them prepped with the top rolled down. They are sticking out of every seat back. In fact, I just finished closing up the interior from my annual and restocked all the bags.

X2, they fit the face fine and zip seal shut. Most everyone is comfortable / familiar with them as well.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

Yeah, but ziplocks are clear.....so after filled, everybody's LOOKING at the contents. Trust me, there is no sure fire solution here. I once had a field crew, two of whom had a commercial flight to catch. We were north of Fairbanks, and it was really convective....safe enough to fly but rough as hell. I suggested we wait till late in the evening, but they had flights. Those three used every bag in the plane, and some bags they brought aboard......really fun flight.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

So it turns out that I'm terrible about posting in here. And worse about taking pictures when I fly.

But yesterday I had the opportunity to take a good buddy out to lunch. We've been stationed together twice now, Fairbanks and Huntsville. He's getting out next month and is moving soon so our calendar options were a little limited, but God blessed us with some BEAUTIFUL weather this weekend.

Wwe flew over to Ft. Payne and checked out the Little River Canyon National Preserve from 5,500 ft. We'd have preferred to be a little lower (still above 2k AGL) but it was a tad bumpy down there. Looked like a very pretty place. I'm not sure why, but the river is about the same silty grey color as some that I've seen up North. Very pretty. There was a definite color change as it entered and spread through Weiss Lake as well. Pretty cool stuff.

From there we turned North to Chattanooga. Well, Collegedale, which is probably close enough. I wasn't sure how busy Lovell Field was and didn't want to bother with it. At Collegedale we rented the courtesy car for a small $10 fee and headed to the nearest 4 star barbecue joint, which happened to be a roadside stand. It did not disappoint. Best barbecue I've had in a minute, and it was under $20 for the two of us. From there we headed over to a Veteran's Memorial in Ooltewah and checked it out for a little bit, then headed back to the airport as he and his wife had a date at the Marco Rubio rally back in Huntsville. Nothing political, they just had never been to a political rally and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Anyways, we took off downhill at Collegedale and flew back direct to Huntsville at 6,500 ft to stay out of the low level turbulence. It was a GREAT day to spend with a good friend.

We actually just got back from dinner with that couple and they asked us to be their youngest daughter's Godparents! We're so honored! First thing I did when we got back home was plot a route to where they are moving to get a good planning figure for our first visit after they move :D .

I had my VIRB running the whole time on the flight up but my laptop is ancient and won't run the software. My wife's busy using her computer to prep for her classes tomorrow, so we'll see if I ever get around to making a video about the flight. With my odds, its unfortunately not likely. I didn't bother taking any photos on the way out because the camera was running. When we got back in after lunch I saw that I forgot to turn the VIRB off and the battery was near dead so I didn't bother mounting it and took some phone pictures instead. Here they are:

Here's the route. I forgot to start my tracker before take-off out of Collegedale.

On a side note, I've GOT to mount my 26's. Sooner than later.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

I've got a big meeting on tuesday and need to wear the new cammo pattern uniform for it. Unfortunately our clothing and sales is so small that its comical. Fortunately Ft. Campbell is just up the road and has a huge one. So I took the plane up there today with the excuse of getting some new uniforms.

I stayed low on the way up and it was a pretty day but bumpy. Bumpy enough that half of my pictures I took came out blurry. Lame.

Here's some. Its pretty flat here:
Image
Here you can see the Saturn V on the side of I-65 if you look closely:
Image

I landed at Outlaw Field (KCKV). The FBO let me use their crew car (which was a nice SUV) for free, even though I didn't need fuel. Really nice place!

I was driving on post and saw this. Made me think of Contact. Now he and I are both old enough to see our helos on sticks all over the place.
Image

After I got my new uniform stuff I drove down to the museum on post which has a pretty decent sized outdoor exhibit. Unfortunately most of the exhibits are getting weather worn as they're repaired/refurbished by volunteers only.

Here's another picture that made me think of Contact. You can see the OH-58D hiding in the back there, too.
Image

This is a C-119 and its cockpit:
Image
Image

They had a C-47, but I forgot to get a picture of the outside. It was pretty beat up. Here's the cockpit:
Image

I didn't realize the inside of a DC-3 was about the same size as a CH-47. That was pretty interesting.

Here's a Cheyenne, or an AH-56. Apparently there were only 10 built, and it could do over 200 knots! Kind of a neat idea - or neat enough that we're still toying with compound helicopters (see the S-97 Raider).
Image

Here's another picture for Contact:
Image

After hanging out at the museum I went downtown to get a burger at the Blackhorse Pub, and it turned out this weekend was the "Rivers and Spires" festival. There was a band finishing sound checks at the outdoor stage when I walked past, but I was really hungry and decided to push on to eat. When I got done eating they were finished already, so I didn't get to hear them. I sat at the bar since I was solo for the day and happened to sit next to the pub's master brewer. He was fun to talk to, and he didn't seem to take offense that I was only drinking water at his pub, haha.

The flight home looked to be even more bumpy down low, so I climbed to 9.5k and came home nose-bleed style.

Flew over a random cloud layer on the way back. Saw a neat rainbow/glory as it started thickening up. Didn't turn out too great in the picture though.

These two pictures were taken maybe a minute apart:

I wonder what's growing here? It's VERY vibrant in real life.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

Thanks for the pictures Cam,

Outlaw Aircraft and a motel made Army quonset style, but with nice laminated wood finish, were one of my stops when I patrolled Sunoco Midwest Continent Pipeline from Longview, Texas to Lima, Ohio. Ft. Campbell was the home of the 101st Airborne. Their 2/17th Air Cav was our (1/9th Air Cav) big rival in Vietnam. The 101st became TO&E identical to 1st Air Cavalry Division after we trained them. Then our division had to change our designation from Air Cavalry back to 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). The "Hundred and Worst" had more history and didn't lose their colors in Korea. Creighton Abrams, who commanded the relief of Bastone when the airborne were surrounded there, was my big commanding officer in Vietnam.

Ouch! 101 was my first assignment and is still my favorite combat patch to wear of the ones I earned.

Probably a much different organization than the one you knew, though. [emoji2]

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

Just razing the 101st. They were one of many good outfits. We were lucky to be in good outfits. I feel for guys like Colin Powell and Swartzkauf in the Americal in Vietnam. In their books we read about good officers turning around bad battalions, but the whole division had problems. Like all who came to Vietnam after the 1st Cavalry Division , it had the same TO&E. Sad.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

Well, today I had all the parts and time to swap the plugs so I did. We're kid-less so far and my wife was working on her last homework submissions for the semester so I figured I'd give her some quiet time and departed the house. I bought all new spark plus since I knew the old ones had been in there for a while. I got the long reach ones because of heard good things. It turned out to be a good call.
Image
Image

It was a pretty easy job. I just followed the procedure and the next thing I knew it was done. Probably took more time to r & r the cowl as it did to swap the plugs. I verified I had enough piston to spark plug clearance by turning a piston to TDC before I installed the first one and there was plenty. After a quick run-up to MOC the plugs I got the cowl back in place. After that I saw i had another hour or so before I needed to be home so I figured the best MOC would be in the air and took off for some pattern work. I gained somewhere around 100 static rpm. Those old plugs must've been toast.

It was a nice night to try perfecting wheel landings (probably will try to perfect those for the rest of my life - its a lot of fun) and as usually happens when I'm by myself, I had a couple of greasers.

Here's a post flight picture of my two favorite toys.

You need to give those old plugs to an old crop duster. They haven't got a really good smile yet.

Re: CamTom12's Aerial Wanderings

I got a Meggit 8406R to combat some pretty high oil temps I've been seeing in the hot, hot summer we've been having down here. I started the R&R this last Friday and got the old cooler removed, but didn't have time to get the new one back on yet, so no updates to oil temps yet.

Here's some pictures:

I tried to convince the wife that it was a sign we should move back to Fairbanks. She's really taking a liking to Huntsville, so I keep the Northern bug in her ear as often as I can!

Depending on how work goes, I'm going to try and get this installed in the next few days and go for a test flight while we're still in our stoopid hot phase.

If temps are still high, I'm going to perform some major cowling surgery. Hoping that's not going to be the case.
