Cargo bag

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Cargo bag

I have always struggled with clutter in the plane. One of the pre-landing checks I was taught was "loose articles". I have had to skip that one.

I keep a sleeping bag, pad, tent, bivi bag, two tool kits, spare tubes and tailwheel tire, fixa flat, tiedowns, chocks, MRP, water, etc. I have not come up with a decent plan to store them. I did sew a cargo net from old seatbelt material which I drape over everything when I am going camping with bikes, but it is always a mess.

So my new plan involves a car top soft bag that I sewed tie downs onto and will simply stuff everything into. It looks like it is going to work well and I will be able to lie my bike flat on top of it to tie down.

Re: Cargo bag

I kinda have your same problem. My big net is too big and unwieldy for day to day use. It is useful for full cargo trips. So just yesterday, helas, I ordered a shorter net to angle down from top of hat section to points near rear of baggage door. I keep stuff in soft bags so it might work.

But this solution is interesting too. Where did you purchase? What size? Please let us know how it works out...

Best,

Tom

Re: Cargo bag

I really like Mountain Wave aviation cargo nets, very high quality and lots of big useful pockets.

Re: Cargo bag

Nicely done. I am not handy with a thread and needle so I find myself perusing REI when they have things on sale, such as the one going on now. I picked up a few bags last year when we had the 180. One was basically for all of my camping gear. Had the "kitchen" in a plastic see through container. Clothes in another bag and then various small bags with, well various things floating about. Not quite the room in the Husky (spoiled by the 180 on that one) for all of that crap so paring things down. Probably more smaller bags instead of a few larger ones.

I like the brown line anchor points on the walls. How are they anchored on the back side of the upholstery panel? Rivnuts or nutplats on a bulkhead or just to the panel itself?

Re: Cargo bag

I like to use an Aviator Kit Bag (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1918371162) and a D-ring through the handles. I secure that the rear seat belt anchors.

Seems like a good idea to me. I'd do some hillbilly engineering to determine whether all that stuff will stay in the bag, and the bag on the floor, in the event of a crash. I'd also highly recommend a net between you and the bag (and bike) regardless.

I'm a big fan of cargo nets...not to keep anything organized, but rather to keep things from getting stuck in the back of my head during a high-G deceleration.

Pretty spendy though.
This outfit is cheaper.

Its 30" x 40" x 8". I got lucky and found in a used outdoor gear store. I wasn't looking for it, it just jumped out at me! I figured it would be a cheap mistake at $25.

Loving it so far, I think it will be good.

Its hillbilly enough that I know its better than what I had before. I sewed on 5 attach points, the front 3 all tie to the Atlee seat rails, and the back 2 to two hard points in the floor and bulkhead. The goal is to limit projectiles, and I'll still use the webbing over a bicycle.

Re: Cargo

The 28” x 32.5 Safari net did the trick in my 182. Angled downward toward the front, it holds all I can put in the 60 + 20 lb. limited rear section. Right now this is mostly water ballast. Additionally it will also handle my tie-down bag which weighs 20 lbs. This is still retained by the net at its front, just opposite the right side of the baggage door. So, practically I can secure 100 lbs. with this everyday net.

Am pleased with solution.

It seems everywhere I went in the military and NOAA, they kept giving me more. I am sure that you could get them through several surplus outfits. Mine are a canvas like material, but more pliable. My son got issued some that are nylon. I rather prefer the canvas ones. They have a large zippered opening (with a big tough zipper), pack other squarish and just do not wear out, there is also a snap down flap to protect the zipper. They are sized to hold an MB-8 parachute and your torso harness, g suit and survival vests. All of which are bulky. I just run the straps through the two rather substantial handles in an 'X'.

Same here. They keep giving them to me, I must have about 20. I’ve seen them in every surplus store I’ve ever been in. Super handy bags. I think you can usually get them for 20-30 bucks.

Re: Cargo bag

I went with the SafariStraps net last year. It's perfect. I ended up cutting the sewn on straps off and just using carabiners to quickly attach it.

Re: Cargo bag

I bit the bullet, closed my eyes, and swiped my credit card last year for Mountain Wave cargo nets. All three stations. No regrets. The pain of the price abates quickly.

I drew diagrams and planned homemade nets, then priced out all the nice aviation hardware. D-rings, hooks, buckles, etc. Wholly crap! Came to about $1200 just for the hardware. Once I saw that, I caved.

I’m really pleased with the result. Just snapped them back in tonight after annual inspection.
