Cessna 172N Turn Coordinator Question

Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?

Cessna 172N Turn Coordinator Question

Turn coordinator has been failing for awhile, tapping brought back to life for a while, but dead in the water now. Better to just buy new than a rebuilt? Also I know it is a vertical mount, but what does the 0 deg or 8 degree mean? Which one do i need?

My observation has been that buying new is a better deal. I haven't had to replace my T&B--still the original 51 year old gyro--but I've replaced both my AI and DG. The cost difference between new and rebuilt is pretty small, but with rebuilt, you don't know what was actually replaced, and it may be that some original old part will be the next thing to fail.

The angle issue is the tilt in the panel. Most of the time 0 degrees is the stock "angle". Tilting it might make it easier to see in some installations, but not likely much of a difference in a 172 unless your head is already scraping the ceiling all the time.

Some airplanes, Super Cub, etc the
Instrument panel is at a 8 degree tilt
When built.

Exactly, that is what I found the tilt is for. Not for easier viewing. Original cessna's are not marked for the tilt, just vertical application. I don't want to pull mine and send for a rebuild. I want to pull mine and replace with a new. I hope someone here knows what a 172n's panel tilt is. Google searches show nothing

The instrument needs to be as close to level in level cruise flight as possible. Anything else will wear the bearings out faster. That's what the tilt is for--to level the gyro. Most Cessnas have a 0 tilt panel.

FWIW I just checked their TAP ad & Rudy A/C Instruments will overhaul a TC for $340. That's way up from a few years ago, but if you check new prices I bet they're way up too and probably 2 or 3 times as much as an OH. Personally I'd go for the OH. I had Rudy do a DG for me once- fast turnaround and good work.

It is a very simple instrument. I really doubt there will be a service life difference between new and OH.

My thinking on this sort of thing....these days, new stuff is usually not up to the quality standard of older stuff. If something has given you good service for years, when it does finally wear out you know you have a good core so you should just OH it. Buy new & who knows what kind of POS you'll get.
