Cessna 182 - 8.00s with stock nose wheel

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

I'm not sure it was an option for them, but I know guys here have put them on. I believe the user QMVD has one on his. Not sure if he needed a 337 or not. Might be worth a PM.

I went with the optional equipment clause on my 182J. Couldn’t be happier. Image

I guess it depends on what your definition of early is. The heavy duty fork suitable for a 600x6 tire was not available on the 182 through the 182D. It can be put on with a field approval in the USA. Not sure what you can do in the UK.

That fork became available with the 182E and I am pretty sure they offered it for at least 10 years. You need to just check the parts book for your year 182 and if it is there then just find the parts, install them and make the log book entry.

And my experience has told me that when trying to get a field approval, not all FSDO's are created equal and not all airframe mechanics are created equal. I know a few mechanics that can get things done in a FSDO where others seam not to be able to. And I know of some FSDO's that have recently approved things that other FSDO's will not touch

Not fair you may say but you need to consider who you are dealing with. If you have a 182 through 182D or a 172 in that same era and want to put a HD Cessna fork on, PM me I may be able to help you out. I have done it on two 182B' and I have a 182 that had it done before I bought it.

Al I ask for in return is a cold DR Pepper if we meet up

Re: Cessna 182 - 8.00s with stock nose wheel

I have a 182 with HD fork and 850's, the field approval is posted somewhere on here.

Regarding the strut tube. Mine was done decades before I bought the plane. The tube is too long and allows the nose wheel to rest of the centering tab if you don't plunk the nose wheel down firm on landing. The firewall is a weak link on these nose-runners so I try to be gentle, but I have had to shut down a few times to pull the tail down and turn the plane (SEL-55 ya ya I know...).

My point is, the big gear is a great improvement on these airplanes, but get the geometry right from the start. I am also focusing on ADS-B and not chopping the tube down for now.

qmvd thank you - am still at the research stage.

There are very few straight tail 182 this side of the pond, and even fewer that haven’t done parachute jumper duty, possibly can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Looking at trade-a-plane it seems many in the USA evolve in a Darwinian sense towards Landis/AirGlas nose fork with 8.50 tyres, Sportsman STOL, BAS four point seat belts and extended baggage. Nearly seems to be the standard for this type.

Am guessing if the HD nose fork is a field approval, the channel strengthening kit for the later models would also be a field approval.

This site has a wealth of straight tail 182 information and I am working through earlier threads.

Re: Cessna 182 - 8.00s with stock nose wheel

Do any of you nose-wheel aficionados have a spare mounting block (the four bolt block that mounts to the strut) for the HD/310 cessna nose fork, or maybe a part number for it?

Re: Cessna 182 - 8.00s with stock nose wheel

My block was fabricated in Anchorage and looks identical to the ABI one - this was in 1994. Have you tried asking ABI if they will sell just a block? There should be a few in the scrap yards as well up here. I am eventually going to buy the Airglass Fork, but it wont be until next year and will have an extra block.

Luckily for me, next year is only about a month away :) Anyways, keep me in the loop, I'm down for panel and interior among other things. Will check with ABI out of curiosity. Thanks!

Hi @onefitty

I would like to do this, I started another thread on it as I couldn't remember where I read this would work. Have you any pics of how tight the fit was with the 15x6.00-5 tyre on the standard fork? Any brand of tire that you used for it?

Our 206 is getting bogged down on the small tire.

Hey irish, I don't have any photos of one installed sorry. The pics I posted earlier probably don't really show the size difference, they're a much larger footprint. I've installed them on several 172's and 177 with standard fork with no problems. You'll definitely notice the difference on the soft stuff compared to the 5.00x5

Cheers :D

Much appreciated @onefitty I have just ordered one, and will fit it in next ten days and report back with a picture update for anyone else who wants to do the same.... :)

Re: Cessna 182 - 8.00s with stock nose wheel

Good morning,

I just wanted to let you know I have a 1962 Cessna 182 with a 210 nose fork with 600/6 nose tire. I am looking to change my 182 nose fork back to a stock nose fork with 500/5 nose tire. If you are interested in mine please let me know.

Cell 817-366-6772

thanks, Carl

It takes 45 mins to swap between the itty bitty stock fork and the HD once you've done it once or twice. The itty bitty wheel gets you a bit more speed.

The HD fork with stock mains leaves one pretty tail low on a '62, but works fine. I don't bother with the trouble to mount the 8's on the mains, but the 6" up front is really much nicer for sand and rougher stuff.

This makes no sense to do. If the large fork was installed correctly the tube has been cut. You will need a tube/fork and wheel to switch back....$$$$$ Or find someone to trade a complete assembly
