In the market for an IO-550 and MT prop now...

Having had a couple full engine failures, that was a job damn well done!

I suspect a representitive of the FAA will soon be knocking on your door to discuss the details, regulatory actions under consideration, corrective measures. They will most definetely carry out a full investigation of the events. In the final analysis they will clearly be requesting your YouTube video as evidence for their "how to" library, WELL DONE SIR =D>

Re: Cessna 205 Catastrophic Engine Failure with Video

I am very impressed by a lot of things here: how well you kept your cool, how the Hillsboro airport was in just the right place, the controllers weren’t too busy to be very helpful, had enough energy to roll off of the runway and onto a taxiway, that you got it on video!

What a contrast to the recent video of another “engine failure“ in a Taylorcraft where the pilot parachuted to safety……….

I forgot to mention you made one mistake not contacting Ridge Wallets to make some mega coin on your video.

Great video and textbook forced power off landing. I was most impressed with your professionalism during the whole experience. You kept your cool and handled the problem like a pro. Your GoPro just happened to be on to capture the experience which will be useful for training. I keep my plane at 7S3 just to the south and know the area well. So fortunate you were in a great spot for this emergency with favorable weather. I think about this same scenario except IMC with low ceilings - and it scares me. I still fly IFR but prefer at least 1000 foot ceilings. I also will be curious what the final analysis shows for the engine failure. Great job and much respect for your Airmanship (Airpersonship for the PC crowd).

Re: Cessna 205 Catastrophic Engine Failure with Video

Thanks to all for the kind words. Training certainly kicked in and while I enjoy some tight strips and fun flying, I was incredibly grateful to be in the perfect spot with 6,600 feet of runway just 6 miles away. The day started with a departure into 1500' overcast and I was over a layer up to the point this happened. The mountains ahead on the trip would have complicated things so much.

To answer some of the questions:
The engine was freshly field overhauled when I bought the plane 5 years ago. It has approximately 750 hours SOH. TTAF 5,300

I just got it back from an extensive annual less than 10 hours before this happened. This included 2 replacement cylinders, rebuild of the fuel controller and intake, adjustment of a through bolt towards the rear of the engine.

I did not have an engine monitor (new motor will definitely) but oil temp and pressure, CHT, and EGT were all normal on the single point read gauges

Other than having the shop tear it down where it is at currently, I'm not sure how to get to a real root cause on the sudden failure. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated

The GoPro happened to be in position because I had recorded my departure for review of my IMC solo flying. Once I had calmed things down in the cockpit, I reached up and just hit the record button.

I didn't bail out because... I am a pilot not a skydiver

Maybe Ridge Wallets wants to sponsor my replacement engine

It is going to be a long wait for a new motor, most quotes seem to estimate 10+ months. I am debating a direct replacement, an IO-520 or IO-550. Sort of prioritizing speed to get back in the air over most other factors but either way it looks like I'll miss all of this year's flying season.

Fantastic job! I hope I never have one of those, but if I do I hope I handle it like you did.

Can you speak to any surprises or lessons learned about this event? For example, how did the airplane feel and perform with the prop stopped compared to any prior training you might have done?

Thanks! My hat is off to you.

It’s been said 100 times, great job. You’re one cool customer. That engine damage is impressive.

My bet will be zeroing in on the replaced cylinders and adjustment of the through bolt procedures. Sounds like a possible over stretch or under torque scenario for the bottom end to come apart like that. My distant 2 cents.

Great job cool under pressure. Hope you find what you need to get in the air again soon. It will be painful waiting for engine with spring coming soon. Good luck

You did a great job! Glad you made it safely. I'd also lean towards a torqueing procedure with the recent cylinder replacement being probable cause.
There's a member on the forum here that has a mid time 520 for sale for a very reasonable price. May be worth looking in to.

Woah! Oh shit is right. Very well done! I’m impressed with how calm you stayed. You even had enough thought to see what the wind was doing prior to being told. Crazy how quick things can go from having a good time to potentially disastrous.
