Cessna 205 Catastrophic Engine Failure with Video

Was on an IFR flight and the engine pretty much broke the crankshaft and cracked the case pretty bad. Prop slammed to a stop immediately. Able to get it down safely into Portland Hillsboro. Haven't determined cause yet, hopefully it will be pulled apart this week. Video and ATC here:

In the market for an IO-550 and MT prop now...

Man, that was stressful to watch, though much less than being there.

I really enjoyed your truncated pep talk to yourself.

Very nice job! Good thing you weren’t over water or obscured mountains terrain. Controllers did an excellent job also.

Well done! Could have been much worse, let’s hope that was your one and only engine failure.

Now the important question, what 550 conversion do you chose? [emoji3]

HOLY SHIT!!

And I mean that in two ways...

1- nicely done!

2- a 550 in a 205 would just be a Rocket!

Superb Job. Every pilot has this very scenario in the back of their mind, now we all will benefit from your experience. Thanks for sharing the story, and hope you are back in the air again soon.

Re: Cessna 205 Catastrophic Engine Failure with Video

Excellent job all round! Your use of ATC to provide info, rather than trying to look up stuff yourself was perfect…..job one: Fly the plane!

Those controllers also handled this extremely well also: Minimal questions up front. I liked approach controller waited quite a while with the “Souls and gas” question: Leave the pilot alone to settle down, give him time to manage the situation, then when it’s obvious he has it under control and has a few seconds, ask the mandatory questions.

The nice thing about an engine failure where prop goes “clank” and stops: no need to go through engine re-start checklist…..Fly the airplane.

What was your altitude when the engine failed?

Text book! Can’t say enough good things about your performance! Same thing happened to me over Green River, Utah in 1996. Great job !!

Haha I was waiting for this joke.

Good video. Made my shorts squeak a little on short final. Reminded me of one of those hotshot glider approaches.

HIO is my old stomping grounds, good place to have an emergency on a nice day!

Fixed your video embed.

Handled like a true professional. Well done. I just wish insurance would help you out with the conversion after saving them so much money.

When the dust settles, can you tell us about the engine? Hours total time, SMOH and so on. May be a good learning experience on what to keep an eye on. Once again, excellent job!

Oops, missed the earlier comment on same subject!

I thought your video was boring, no drama at all. That's a compliment.
