Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

Shit... Could you imagine anyone complaining about prop noise, engine noise, or gun noise at the Austin Fly-In. Never happen.

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

Speaking of noise...or the lack of it, there was a certain C-170 that didn't make much noise on the takeoff from JC..came pretty close to making another kind of noise..bent metal and pine trees. We all down at the southern end were hopeing he would have made a little MORE noise (Like in a wide open throttle).
Noise can be good or bad..so WHAT!?
I fly a Citabria so I don't get catagorized with the Maules or Cessnas...I'm happy!

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

This is getting good! Mule deer, tree huggers, Sierra club. They all eat nuts and berries. Shame on you rob for using your 45 as the dinner bell at jc. It really hurt my ears. I burn jet fuel, av gas and love my very loud 180. This thread is really reminding me why most Alaskans cannot relate to most of the folks that live in the lower 48. I realize Idaho or kalifonica is not Ak, but we fly airplanes gang. they burn gas or jet fuel and they are loud!

Look at decimals of a helicopter. It blows away a skywagon. Anyone remember the a star b3 fly by and over the house a few times at jc during the fly in? Was anyone really complaining of the noise?

I have to concur with Rob on this one. Are we really talking about the noise our planes make...??? Really? Poor little deer. Damn Terry, you should really appolgize. So should all those helicopters and jets that fly out of our airports each day. Guess this means I have been drinking... Nope, not a drop.

I really do try to be neighborly when I fly but I must say, the day I don't like the loud noise of an airplane, will someone please shoot me. Thanks and sorry to offend some of you. I am just being honest. Sorry Zane, don't think I can go to Oshkosh with you. All that noise is just not good for my ears...

Haha fore sure. There's something profound to be found at the bottom of a beer. :D

Long props, big tires and beer........some would say they are penis extensions.
Wishing I had the big tires.

Being as how I fly a Cherokee 180 with a 76-inch fixed pitch prop turning at maybe 2,450-2,500 rpm, with "little" wheels, does that mean I don't need to compensate for anything? :D

Couple of points:

1 - Several folks mentioned prop tips at supersonic speed, but the pponk.com calculator shows that even an 88-inch prop turning at 2,800 rpm is still slightly less than mach one at the prop tips ... the accompanying comments on the pponk site discuss the fact that excessive noise is actually being generated in the subsonic (or "trans-sonic") range, between mach 0.92 and 0.98.

Sorry can't help myself, being as I'm an engineer.

2 - There are all kinds of noise-makers out in the bush or out on the water that I'd just as soon never encounter again ... ATVs, PWCs and snow machines come to mind .... in my younger years I spent a number of late fall mornings out on deer or elk hunts in the mountains of Idaho, often involving long strenuous hikes and climbs up a mountainside, trying to be as motionless and noiseless and odorless as possible, then if lucky I'd hear a big bull bugling to his lady friends, and then I'd be mentally coaxing him out of the trees for a clean shot, only to have a couple of a-wipes ride their dirt bikes right through the middle of the clearing, ruining the moment, and tempting a less tolerant hunter to shift his target.

With that image in mind, we aviators flying the backcountry are easy victims of the holier-than-thou granola-chomping Sierra Clubbers who want to "save" the forest or the whales or the pig-faced gopher snake or the granola-chompers themselves, or whatever the hell else is "threatened" by anyone but the granola-chompers accessing "their" wilderness.

Exhibit A - the National Park Service's proposal this year to dramatically limit overflights of the Grand Canyon by GA aircraft because of alleged noise experienced thousands of feet below.

Let's not be like Marx's proverbial capitalists - who were said to be quite willing to sell the prol's the ropes to hang them with - by having so much fun making noise in the backcountry that we end up being the proximate cause of our own loss of future fun.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

I guess it is time for a blanket apology.

My 80" prop on my Maule turning 2500 rpm only gets up to less than 0.6 Mach; therefore, does not rattle the pinecones out of the trees, shatter windows, or cause the neighbors to call their council.

I will try to do better. Maybe if I remove the muffler and get the engine to back fire, my poor little Maule can be a macho plane too.

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

Maules are an awesome aircraft!!! Don't be mistaking!! What went from a ribbing has once again turned serious. Airplanes and flying them are part of our rights. Be neighborly but for god sakes let's get off the high horse of this plane and that prop is better than the other for the sake of noise. Cubs are noisy when they are the only thing you hear when your deep and have no one around you. Same goes for that damn train that has to blow his whistle at 3am when he is going through town.
Most of these aircraft and their engines have been around for 40 plus years if not longer. Planes make noise. It's just that simple.

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

damn! what a tough crowd...i think u are ALL right! i've found when in the frank, i leave my prop set to a measley 2300, and push the MP up and over to boost if i need it...most of the time i don't less i am heavy. i work damn hard to be a good ambassador for the BCP crowd when back there...i dont blast, especially with floaters and etc around. have also willingly hauled, for free, quite a few hikers in and out of a few places in the frank. most seem to really appreciate it, and soon learn the utility of a good back-country airplane. when i haul friends out of challis, they are at indian or upperloon is a matter of minutes, and they are then able to spend more time hiking/fishing. nothing wrong trying to set a decent example, and i think that we would all go a long ways trying things like this looking for no gain, just being another "owner"of an incredible wilderness, and having a good-size amount of respect for all involved...

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

UtahMaule's M-7 surprised me how quiet it was when he flew into my place, good technique helps there of course. I LOVE noisey airplanes, but I keep my own as quiet as possible, and thats damn quiet and for one reason only. I can go more places and do more off airport landings and no one complains because they don't even know I'm there, as in my recent flight into a construction site to drop off the crane bill. I checked back with the contractor a few days later, no feedback (bitching) from the many high dollar homes in the rural residential area, again, probably because they didn't even know I was in and out. Call me sneaky or politically correct, I don't care, but I'll keep my own bird stealthy!

No, I'm not. I think they have done some good somewhere, but their agenda mostly contradicts my interests, being a backcountry pilot and former motocross racer. Remember, every interest group everywhere has one thing in mind-- their own interests, hence the clever name. Our interests are taking our planes where we like. Their interests are preserving wilderness so that they aren't bothered by noise and modern machinery, an interest not too dissimilar from people who move away from cities. Everybody wants something, or a combination of things, and the often can't agree what is best for their favorite shared resource. It just gets harder when the population gets larger. Every law or regulation known to man is a response to increased population and pressure on the shared resource, whether it's airspace, silence, water, crude oil, land, or good looking women. Your best chance at reducing regulation is to release a plague into society.

Whew... did I make anyone mad? I've got opinions too, but I only share these kind once every few years. :) I'll continue to make fun of penis props, but secretly I am jealous.

This thread is destined for hall of fame.

Only thing I can figure,
#1...Cessna's have bigger balls.
#2...Continentals are superior.
Oh hell, burp.......I better go to bed. LOL

Wow!

Guys stop this thread as there is no good to come from a statement like above. Why would any good person say something like this while drunk and not apoligize when sober. #-o I have a helicopter and a Maule and wouldn't mind any other aircraft as well. The Maule is an outstanding airplane, as is any Cessna and we all love our planes.

If a drunk man speaks a sober mans mind, think about the nasty person who originated this thread and find it is better to let this thread pass. Then again, Zane could always take the high ground and remove it due to the ignorance involved.

Terry, I never met you, but if you are now sober it sure is a good time to apoligize to all those who you offended.

Take care all and hope to see many at Oskosh,
Tom

Haven't sobered up all day, most likely won't all week either. And if I do some time this summer.....ain't gunna apologize! :D

Things seemed a little slow lately......just stirring the pot a little!!

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

Well,......we kinda have 2 over lapping related threads/topics here. Maybe that is why.....
This thread is destined for hall of fame.

Carrying on the somewhat hijacked side of the discussion:

Look at decimals of a helicopter. It blows away a skywagon.

Well, I have to agree the heli was loud.....but to my ears it is not as irritating/piercing as that high frequency high pitched 'snap' that the (ok...) near sonic tips of the prop makes on top of the high volume lower prop frequencies ('sound storm' was what I called it, for lack of the knowledge to use a more scientific term).

Ok. I am a wimp. But I really LIKE! to fly back there in that beautiful Central Idaho Mountain country......and other beautiful areas such as these. Let me remind the 'Cojones crowd' that we live in a democracy. Most of the other special interest groups can out-vote and/or rally more votes than us backcountry pilots can even hope for. I would NOT want to be responsible for further curtailment of our airplane access. I have a high mileage back(spine) and legs that can't carry a loaded backpack any more than out to the car/plane..... Those who are fit now, enjoy it, old age is waiting. Also, some of the oldsters here have grand kids they want to leave this 'option' to.....
This option IS a TREASURE. Lets value and take care of it like it deserves.

Yes, there are places that are ideal for blowing things up, firing cannons and open pipes and magnificent 'sound storms'. Lets try to separate the two and treat them completely differently.

We actually live in a Republic, governed by laws and not the whims of the masses. That is something more people need to learn. It does protect your minority right to do something as long as there is not direct harm to someone else. All these imagined slights like noise polution, light polution etc, emotional stress... are ginned up by the intolerant to limit the activities of others. Most often what we see here in Alaska is people limit the activities of others because they may someday imagine themselves doing something else but mostly never do. Now a better way might be that we all respect each other, watch noise where we can but also respect other's right to do something that we may not agree with.

I think I will one day fill my plane with beer and bring it to one of the fly ins to get the conversation started. Also AK Tahoe needs to move back to Alaska, he will soon be deported from California when they find out his views.

Yes, yes,I know, republic......(representatives which are elected by people who mostly don't even know where the capitol is.....)
My point is still valid. When it comes to changes in the laws, the people who do change them are sensitive to the clamor of the zealots and their associates/confederates/sympathizers.......and respond accordingly.

Thought this was interesting. Google aircraft noise or cessna decibel chart and a lot of stuff comes up. Seems like the 180/185 is hard to find but you see 206, bonanzas, helicopters referenced everywhere. Typing here on an iPhone. Would paste more links if it where easier to do.

http://www.wolf-aviation.org/aircraft_noise.htm

http://www.fican.org/pdf/aircraft_noise.pdf

Someone referenced I need to move back to Ak. I have never left. I am only a part timer in kalifornica. I really do try to be neighborly when flying down here. One big reason why we go and talk with all the ranchers around the actual fields we land.

It's my fault, when ever I'm on Crystal Meth I become emotional

I thought the "better noise" and "bigger balls" was an attack on the Maule. After a couple hits of Acid I now see that these words are those of profound thought, not ignorance.

All joking aside, I chair a committee which is now trying to have the restrictions for rotary wing traffic lifted from W48. The Maryland Aviation Adminstration sound study concluded that due to the tight pattern for rotary wing aircraft, noise levels at the neighboring communities were lower for light helicopters than Fixed wing.

The noise is a serious issue in the lower 48 and the helo guys, like myself, think there is no sound better then a descending UH-1. I for one agree. An AH-1 isn't bad either (not just saying this because I was my aircraft :D )
