Last month cool and useful wheels, were 'penis extensions' this month it's the props.... Pretty soon just owning a capable airplane will get you accused of penis envy [-X  #-o

Oddly enough, if there's one thing I kinda miss by having an MT on my 180, it would have to be the noise. I have a couple friends whose C-58s are the full 90" rather than cut back to 88 like most sea plane props. They make wonderful music 8)
My observations have been that :
a) noise is beautiful, and
b) anyone who says the C-180 seaplane prop isn't adding more thrust once it goes sonic, hasn't spent much time behind one in that configuration.

Take care, Rob

Me think you right. When Kevin would take off at JC he was noticeably higher than everything but the Cubs and climbing steeper. Noise yes but it was still cool. If I remember he pulled it back before the end of the strip. Or maybe he is just a better pilot?

Cheers

We all down at the southern end were hopeing he would have made a little MORE noise (Like in a wide open throttle).
Noise can be good or bad..so WHAT!?
I fly a Citabria so I don't get catagorized with the Maules or Cessnas...I'm happy!

Hmm, there was only 3 170's at the fly in that I saw. You can't be talking about me? I have the throttle smashed forward as far as it will go on every take off.

I actually think that was a C-172 in the color of white, except for the pilot's seat.

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

the second year I went up to JC a friend in his 170 went along.. He routinely just cleared the trees wherever we went and had trouble in takeoff from every place we went to.... his last landing was at sulphur creek where he went off the strip and into the weeds on rollout.... after that he went home and put the plane up for sale and never flew again.... a couple years later another friend with a 170 came with me and he too had a cruise prop... after two days of struggle he flew down to caldwell or one of the other strips around boise and got his prop twisted down to climb specs... after that he had no problems.... I was flying my tripacer back then and I had my prop flattened to 53 inch pitch... I routinely got off all strips I went to before half the runway was gone and on leaving JC fully loaded with half fuel and over 170 pounds of camping gear and my fat self I got off before the mid field outhouse.... best thing i ever did to my pa 22 was the prop pitch.. add to that the vortex gens and it was a great back country plane... My maule is better of course with 210 HP but I loved the tripacer for it's performance and the fact that it would come down like a rock when I wanted too and could hit my spot easily....hows that story for hijacking a thread.....

The tower chief at my home field referred to me as the "simonized manhole cover on downwind" when I was flying my -22 after seeing a few steeper approaches. It was a fun, economical, and perfectly capable plane in the back country too.

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

actually i had a little more done to it i also put in 160 HP pistons when i overhauled the engine... I would get 2800 RPM on static runup if I wanted it and on critical takeoffs which was over redline but oh so very much appreciated in the back country. stay light on the nose wheel and you are good to go most everywhere in the frank church Incidentally the nose wheel on the tri Maule is the same as on the old tripacer....

Not bad-- Totally devoid of a unified point, and poor, disjointed anecdotes about multiple aircraft unrelated to the thread. I'd rate this one a solid 7/10 on the hijack scale. :)

My mistake..this was a type-o...it most definitely C-172..I have it on video as it passed in front of my plane.

Good thing that someone else is out there making some real noise, or those floaters might never appreciate how considerate you yourself are being.

Re: Cessna noise vs Maule noise?

I'm surprised this wasn't split into a noise abatement thread long ago, maybe under Procedure. That way Terry could sit back with a cold one :D & let the Cessna's & Maule's duke it out. it was obviously a lighthearted jab to stir the pot, liked it. I searched for a noise topic & didn't find much, some about JC opps, which was again covered a bit here.

Read all your posts & see both sides & appreciate opinions. As far as the noise, I personally like it... To a point. When I was in highschool & lived with my parents, I use to love being woken up at first light to the sound of a friend's Seaplane fan equipped 185 departing our strip. Or standing next to hangars during airshows, sure it's loud & plug your ears a few seconds & it's past. We've been lucky & only had one neighbor early after construction on a warpath about noise & air traffic, ect. The fact is, weather or not you think supersonic equals thrust, at what point you think pulling the prop back is safe SOP's & what type of noise is just intolerable... Can't make all the people happy all the time. There's many opinions here & were all pilots! The minority in the noise issue.
What ever aircraft you fly, enjoy the hell out of it!! We've worked hard to be able to afford them & maintain them & fuel 'em up. And if you can nock down the dB's a bit & be safe, why not eh? Nobody really wants to be the spoiler, there's been enough recreation areas (of all types) lost to all by the actions of few.

That may have ended kinda preachy sorry, go convert some Fossils into Fun! =D> :!:

Sorry Iceman, but Harleys are just slow-overpriced-NOISE. I do however commend you on your exellent taste in aircraft.

didn't buy them to go fast just enjoy the road... and as several others in this thread have said,,,"I like the noise"...I see the fast and stupid zipping in and out of traffic every day...Jean and I just enjoy the fresh air and yes,,, the noise....Oh and by the way... mine has been bumped up to 96 CU inches, and has a few more subtle upgrades done to it which dino's out to 103 HP.... and it may not be the fastest bike on the road but it's fast enough for me..... :D
