Hey... That hurts... Here is some of our "desert"... If you stood Idaho on end you couldn't land this high (12,500')

o.k, o.k. you desert guys are sensitive. my uncle lives in reno, and having
been there in the summer and all over nevada, for that matter, it seems
a little harsh...but as some have said, cool in it's own way...good place
for the "nevada rally" dirt bike race too. cool pics of your maule. been
around a couple of those, they seem to perform exceptionally well
with the 540...

Got 16 votes on the poll. That is second, but way ahead of the others. Probably a strip that is more intimidating than any of the others.

Speaking of the performance. Last June at JC some of us flew to Graham, Weatherbe, Atlanta.

Then we hopped over the ridge to Smiley Creek. The ridge line is close to 9300msl. One of the planes was a good ol Cessna 182 with 29s. We were loaded about the same and the 182 had to circle to gain altitude. My M7 could easily have shot straight over the ridge line. I was surprised at the difference in performance.

I think me and jomac have a lot in common. I'll bet when we meet we'll hit it off.

Better to make allies than enemies. Except for FAR left types.

As stated before...I plan on a trip to the Sedona-Prescott area some time this spring. I think a sojourn over to the chicken strip mike be doable thing. Will anybody be in the chickken strip area around this time?
Let me know..I would like to check out the area.

I love our mountains and all the "backcountry" strips we have. I am blessed to live 1-2 hrs from most of them and they are all fun to fly to. But when I really want to have fun I head for the desert. There are endless places that are much more challenging and exciting to land and for those who like easy places there are plenty of those too.

Shoot... That's not Coyote Flats. Coyote is on the other side of the valley. Over there where you can see snow. It is only about 9800'

That pix. was taken south of White Mountain Pk. It is about 12,500' and has a good flat area. The local hang glider guys go up there.
About two miles north there was an actual landing strip that was used by Barcroft Station.

O.K. I know WAY too much info.

I would be into a camp out at The Chicken Strip. March 11-15, April 19-23, May 28-June 1

Those are the days I have more than 2 in a row off.

I had a hunch DR was lurking out there. It took a good thread on Chicken Strip and a few shallow minded folks to knock the desert to bring him out.

It was all a well conceived plot to trap him.

I always enjoyed his comentary.

Hey- you're talking about my old home- I worked a few seasons out of Bishop for White Mountain Research Station that operates Barcroft. Once hiked from East Line Street (4,000') to the top of White Mountain peak (14,000') in one day. That was an ass-kicker. We had bottled oxygen at the Barcroft station and a pulse-ox for testing people that would drop in. It was scary to see the readings on some of those folks. My brother once found a nice arrow head up there- I'm guessing about where that Maule is pictured. We did a little hang gliding too, but just tame stuff near the valley floor.

-DP

p.s.- What ever happened to Swab's High Sierra Chileno peppers? Too many wetbacks employed in the Lone Pine packing house is my guess- I'm sorry they're out of business.

Re: Chicken Strip

I'd really like to fly into here, but would like to know if the strip is open year round? Do I need to notify anyone or ask permission? Potholes, dangers to look out for?

It's on the tighter side for my Commander, but on a cool day (like now in the fall) it shouldn't be a problem. Does anyone know if the hot springs stay hot year round as well?
