Content policy: Backcountry flying only

Effective January 1 2017, I am changing the content policy to only allow on-topic discussion, which is general aviation backcountry flying.

Off-topic and political discussion is no longer allowed. User signatures with politically oriented messages or links will be reset. There will be zero tolerance for political discussion.

Subjects that are closely related to backcountry flying like: firearms and hunting, bushcraft and survival, products and technology related to aircraft or piloting, photography and videography, etc are still well within the charter of this website and remain welcome conversation.

While airline/heavy metal/military aviation/history is interesting, please leave it for other forums. This forum is specifically general aviation backcountry flying. If that offends you, I'm sorry. The goal is to narrow the focus topically.

Non-flying "blog" posts, politics, and any other off-topic posts will be moderated and/or removed.

I'm very grateful for each member's presence and participation in this community, and I appreciate your understanding.

The full site guidelines and policies are available, and are required reading all all new registrants. If it's been a long time since you signed up, perhaps give those a look.

Sincerely,
Zane

Re: Content policy change for 2017

Fine with me. Especially no politics--got way, way too much of that this past year. And I agree, and thank you, Zane. One of the real positives of this site is that it's not a place for jerk wannabees who get their jollies out of insulting others. There are enough Internet trolls on other sites!

I'm onboard. Way too many forums turn into a cage fight over completely off topic discussions.

Re: Content policy change for 2017

It's your sand box Zane. I know you have worked hard to make BCP what it is today, so you have earned the right to do as you please.

IMHO politics plays a huge part in our ability to do the type of flying we do. Debating the pros and cons of aviation related legislation is American as apple pie.

I do not expect this post to change anything. Just saying.

Cheers...Rob

YOUR SITE YOUR RULES!!
I am just happy that today I can join the other members that respect you and your efforts!!! If I want to pontificate about some political crap or religion or whatever other crap I want to talk about than I can start my own site. Feel free to delete anything I post that is not in line with the rules ( most likely too much whine). Thanks for bringing the forum to life for all of us!!

Re: Content policy change for 2017

Zane,

I know you toil over the balance between a free range and keeping content healthy and on target. You've stated that many times before when the community has gone through our roughest times. Good on you for continuing to evolve your vision and make the difficult choices.

Brett

That's true, and when it's aviation or land use being discussed, I would consider that fairly on-topic. There's is big difference though in discussing those matters of policy and government rule making as they pertain to flying, and making the leap to the kind of ugly divisive politics that I seek to avoid here. It's easier to just say no politics. Go to Facebook for your fill of that.

To be honest, the politics stuff has waned around here to almost undetectable levels, and I have enjoyed it. It makes for a better forum. But it's not my sole purpose in the policy change.

Re: Content policy change for 2017

Thank you Zane! I believe that this site will be better for it and it is right thing to do.
As a bona fide lurker, it is often intimidating to come out of the shadows and post something on a site to the core group of posters. Seeing discussion around politics and such certainly doesn’t make it any easier.
I am going to try to make a point of posting more often (some) in 2017. (...Does this count?..)
Cheers,
Joe

Re: Content policy change for 2017

You've exempted my favourite tangental subjects (guns/hunting/bushcraft/survival), so thanks for that!

I fully support the no-politics rule.

Your site, your rules, and you've done a great job in the past.

Happy New Year!
