Cool People in Aviation

So not going to bore you all with the details. But I might be purchasing a C170 this weekend. I'm just waiting on the oil Analysis results to come back, and then we'll go look at it. Long story short, the owner sounds like an awesome guy, and since I didn't haggle him on price, he offered to come pick me and friend up in a BEECH 18!!! I don't know what I'm more excited about... purchasing my first plane, or getting to go on a three hour cross county in a Beech 18. How cool is that!? Now I don't have to rent a plane, or buy commercial tickets to get down there. I already purchased another GoPro to document the trip. Just hoping for good weather now.

Anyway... This is my first post. Been lurking here a while. I'm sure I'll be more active once I get a plane. I just got my private last summer, and have been wanting to fly tail draggers. Unfortunately (or fortunately) there aren't any around for rent so I felt the need to buy one. I'll be getting my endorsement in the plane, hence I need a friend to go with me to fly the plane back (he only has 1000 hours in a 170, and currently owns an RV10).

Re: Cool People in Aviation

Helluva first post. If you didn't haggle the price must have been one of those fair sellers that offered at a fair price. Congrats. I visited a friend in the old neighborhood and figured you might get a kick out of his plane. BTW at 60~70 gph fuel burn, quite a nice offer on the part of the seller. As you said, "cool people in aviation".

Bob that is a great picture. Something about a plane sitting in a driveway is just awesome. The car looks pretty cool too, Is it yours? I had no idea they burn that much fuel. That is crazy!

Thanks for the replies.

Yep, the ride is mine.

Feeding (2) engines each being 985 CID takes a bit plus 1 quart of oil per hour per engine. The fuel burn I quoted is if he wants to show you how nice it flies at 170 kt, but at 150 kt about 40 gph.

That is very cool. I did exactly the same, got my PPL and then bought a 170. Great decision, and it really is a fabulous airplane that does a lot of what I need. It is my first airplane and I think there is a very good chance it will be my only one.

I also bought a 170 after getting my private. I learned so much in old 15C. I flew it for around 1000 hours and loved every minute of it. They are great handling planes with outstanding forward visibility.

Awesome. I hope this plane is everything I need it to be... and that the weather is good this weekend. Thanks for the feedback

I'm another one who's first plane was a 170. It was a great plane and I learned a lot about flying during the 700hrs I put on it. It got the job done every time, from short backcountry strips, to off airport sites, to camping with the family and dog. You just have to know it's limits and learn to fly it well, just like anything else. I hope yours is as much fun for you as I had with mine!

Re: Cool People in Aviation

Congrats and good luck on the (new to you) 170. I too am new to this site, and also got my PPL last spring. I've been renting a 172 from my instructor, but still looking hard for my first plane. Keep me posted on how the 170 works out for you. Cheers!

Re: Cool People in Aviation

So we made it back last night. It was an awesome day and a pretty cool first adventure. Hopefully a lot more to come. It was pretty uneventful, except that the plane has two tanks in the right wing and one in the left. So it leans right more than I liked. I'm going to have someone check over the Aileron set up and make sure all is good there. And learn to manage my fuel appropriately.

I couldn't figure out how to post the pictures directly, but you can check out my album.

Great looking 170, congrats for sure. Now what did you cruise at speed wise in the 18 and the fuel burn?

I owned a ragwing 170 for about 11 years and put about 1700 hours on it. Great airplane, slower roll rate than the 170 A or B models but nice and light on the controls to make up for it. Like a lot of them, mine was modified with an extra tank on the LH side for a total of 50 gallons fuel. Those are actually surplus C120/140 tanks, Cessna musta known in '48 that they'd be phasing out the rag 120/140 so started using up the extra parts they had in stock on the new 170 model. The reason the rag 170 ailerons are lighter handling than the A & B is that they are 120/140 parts also-- smaller and hinged differently than the 170 A & B model ailerons.

The C170 Assn is (or used to be) a great resource for a new 170 owner, you might wanna think about joining or at least go check out their discussion site.

Congrats, sounds like the guy you bought the plane from must have been pretty interesting. Think I found where he is a merchant marine or something to do with big ships.

Thanks for the response. I have stalked the C170 Assn site, I guess it is time to join them. I'm having the plane looked at by a local 170 expert (Kevin Mays). Sounds like there is some adjustment needed to the plane.
