Engine mount advise
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
My buddy just got the bad news his engine mount is cracked. We are wondering if its better to just get it welded or upgrade to a new/better one. Any recommendations? Thanks

What is the condition of the mount otherwise? Is it 70 years old or 40? Is it now being used to hold a much higher output engine than was originally installed on it? Is there signs of internal corrosion? Is your friend interested in potentially having a smoother less vibration prone operation?
I usually lean towards replacing the mount with new myself, these questions might help make that decision.

Agreed and on top of that would be which mount is it? Cessna made several improvements over the years - I would not even mess with some of the earlier ones - the ones with out the two side vertical tubes.
This is a good read on the Cessna engine mounts (not very long), I'm not pitching the seaplanes west mount - just providing it for some info on the older cessna mounts.

I have a C185 mount in the pile of "hangar sale" stuff I've been meaning to list for sale. I know nothing about Cessna's' so maybe it in not applicable or worth considering putting a C185 tilt down mount on a C180.

I have a tilt down 185 mount on my 180, heavy duty mount. But, the engine is about an inch or so farther forward.

IF it is fuel injected, I have a SeaPlanes West mount that might fit in my “Hangar Sale” pile. If he is interested I can find the part number?

Wide body 182 mount won’t fit on a 185 unless you get out a cutting torch.

If that mount fit in a 185 it wouldn’t have made the trip to Seattle!
