I guess some people have gotten passionate over this thread and I can understand that. I've mentioned before that we might be the last generation to do some of the things we enjoy before big brother decides it's not in our best interest or needs to be banned because someone was "deeply offended" by something I did or said. When I was growing up if you whined about something your peer group would beat the shit out of you and you would shut up. Maybe we need to have an elite group that travels the country and bitch slaps whiners to get them back in touch with reality. I would be pissed if I was out in the boonies somewhere and a fed comes up and wants me to do a weight and balance computation to his satisfaction so he could verify that I'm operating safely. Been doing it for almost 35 years now and am still in one piece so back off. Sorry for the rant but bottom line, less interference in my life the better. Watch the "Great Waldo Pepper" and take notes when the old friend (now a fed) says things are changing now-no more wild flying. Then watch him cheer Waldo on while he outflys the kraut- right before he grounds him forever.

....and then I got a letter in the mail yesterday from the FAA. There goes some more gas money!

I do not think he was a real FAA guy. If he was, he would have been smart to leave that part out.

I read his posts (from James) with some skepticism about who he was, I don't think anything can be learned from the FAA about off airport operations. In order to learn and become better you are going to have to be careless in their eye's, I would love to take an FAA guy for a 409 check (whatever the # is??). Your landing where

Power trips... cops, mall cops (like the movie), public counter clerks, courthouse employees, even bank tellers: seems like an awful lot of folks who have the power to say no (or put you off some other way) like to try to use it. Unfortunate, but I guess that's human nature for ya.

While those who have those power trips you talk about are out there - absolutely! - there are those private individuals who are on their own personal little power trips too - those who feel they need not be accountable to anyone but themselves and to hell with their fellow man. Most of these people unfortunately do not live on their own little island I've personally found an inordinate number of them seem to possess pilot certificates Some don't, and fly anyway

It's when you stray outside the lines of arbitrary authority where I tend to look the other way.

I like the stock wings better, now that I've flow them for a while. The long wings are slower in cruise, with the same prop, but I can come in, or stall, just as slow now that I'm used to the stock ones. I can also stop quite a bit shorter now, but most of thats because of the brake boosters on the new cub. Take off is a little shorter too, on the new one, however, there's some other things could affect that too, like big exhaust, fresher engine and overall a little lighter. The stock wings have way better clearance tho, and for the cost, extra weight, performance etc., I'm convinced they are the way to go.

I'm sure there will probably be some arguments about this...

However, I really love my new Cub.....

wow, as hotrod150 said, lot's of hostility here at times, when u bring
up the faa or etc. my own experience has shown after stacking up my
old 182p, that the faa was nothing but fact finding and helpful.
even made me feel better about where and when i stuffed the a/c
due to a large dose of wind-shear...no injuries to any one, except
for my pride...once they found that my p/wk was in order, they too
said that "shit sometimes happens!" i have found that most are
very professional, and good at what they do. even helped to speed up
the ins. process and retrieving the a/c from the parking spot...

Don't get me wrong...not all people with authority are jerks, but sometimes when you get into a tight, it seems they really turn the screws down. As I have posted before, I delt with FAA in a similar way, two were decent and one was all about kicking my ass!

I was sort of sad to see him tarred and feathered...I got busted for a pilot deviation at Fairbanks in 04. Mike Alkana was the fed that poppped me two months after I got home. He was incredibly nice and professional. If I ever get back to Fairbanks, I'll ask him to lunch. I have heard the horror stories for 20 years but all my dealings with the FAA have been positive....that being said, I expect the a call this afternoon from the prick of the FAA pricks.....I hope James doesn't judge all of here as quickly as a few here judged him....

Agreed, Alkana is one of the good ones. He also has substantial actual experience in the industry, and didn't go to the FAA because nobody with airplanes would hire him. Those types are around.

Unfortunately, like any organization, including air carriers by the way, one rotten apple can really color everyone in that outfit, and that's too bad.

There are a LOT of good people in the FSDO's.

And, some idiots.

Unfortunately, we generally don't get to pick....
