Field approval 337 for my 182 fork and tires

Hey guys I am finishing up the annual on my new to me 1957 182. I have installed a heavy duty nose fork and 6.00x6 tire and in process installing 8.00x6 mains. I could use any advice about the field approval process that anyone could offer. Or if anyone has had a successful field approval or 337 that they could share with me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My first piece of advice is don't install any parts on your airplane that require a field approval until you have the field approval, you may be grounded for months waiting for it. Oh yes, also it's kinda illegal.

Second, make sure there are no STCs available for what you're trying to do or they won't sign off on it. Feds won't approve a field approval for something that could be approved by available STC.

Third is do what you're doing, try and find someone who's done what you're trying to do. Preferably an A&P that works cheap! [emoji3] Copies of previously approved installations are great but not necessarily a slam dunk. Also DERs are a great resource.

Re: Field approval 337 for my 182 fork and tires

Thanks Hale. So far I am operating as my own a&p. I just don't have a lot of paperwork experience on such matters. I have been out of aviation for 13 years until this little 182 showed up in my life. I'm just trying to spruce her up a little. The more research I do I am starting to consider this just a minor alteration with perhaps no need for field approval. There is not really a big change in weight and by 1962 this was optional equipment. I don't feel as if im reinventing the wheel with this upgrade. Any opinions on the idea of this as a minor alteration?

Since no one has jumped in with a firm answer yet, I will throw in my 2 cents. Not sure what you meant by hd fork, but if you you have a 206hd/310 nose wheel fork you are using, I believe its just a minor alteration installing optional equipment. The large fork should be listed in the TCDS as an option. I'm thinking I've read it and also it specified approved tires as well. Its been a while since I last read it. #-o

Rock, seems it wasn't an option until 1962. And btw way it is a cessna 310 fork. It is looking like I will need a 337 field approval.

Re: Field approval 337 for my 182 fork and tires

I owned a 56 182 for a short time with the setup you are describing. It was on it when I bought it and it paperwork to go along with it. I believe was a field approval and I definitely remember seeing a letter from Cessna approving/backing up the setup. This was N5351B if you want to pay the $10 and get a copy of the cd from the FAA.

I put the same setup on my current 66 182J and it was an easy logbook entry since it was an option from the factory to do it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Field approval 337 for my 182 fork and tires

I know zip about the nose fork issue, but as the owner of a much modified airplane that seems not to be on the AMLs of most after market thingies, I'm familiar with the delays in getting field approvals--and it's much worse now than it was 10 years ago, at least in the Denver FSDO area. It used to be that my IA would make a request, and 2-3 weeks later, we'd have the paper work. Now it's more like 2-3 months if we're lucky. My latest improvement 337 was started in late August last year, and it took until mid January to get the FAA's approval, and the item was ordered after that (echo: don't make changes until the 337 has been approved). Then the manufacturer is running behind, so at least as of this morning, we still don't have it.
