No joke, I thought it was supposed to help us not worry!

Bmurrish is right. MountainMatt's third hit is at the Mexican Mountain Airstrip and the the fourth is about a two mile hike from the third up Spring Canyon. It is a beautiful canyon and easy trail hiking. I'm betting he was hiking up that canyon when he pressed the OK button. Depending on your aircraft's performance it is possible to take off and fly up that same canyon but if it were me I'd have to be concentrating on where I was going and would not be pressing the OK button on my SPOT.

Re: Flight Following

Yes, the SPOT does seem to be kind of a double-edged sword, great when its working and nerve racking when its not.

My last trip the tracking updated great till the end of the last leg where it left me over the middle of Golovin bay #-o . Had no idea till i called home, much to the relief of my wife, who was concerned i had parked the plane on the ice, or worse in the water. Had to mass e-mail everyone tracking me that the plane and i were hi and dry, and parked where we were supposed to be.

Re: Flight Following

Well, that' didn't work as well as I wanted.

I think my SPOT may be busted. I sent about 5 SPOT OK messages each day and that was the last one sent. Just sent another one this morning confirming I was back home and the plane was in the hangar. I'll have to give SPOT a call and see what's up. Great device when it's working as it should, a big mind game when it's not.

Thanks everyone for keeping a look out.

Oh, and we hiked up that canyon, great hike (I didn't fly up that canyon). Just hit the SPOT to see how far we made it. I don't think it's a canyon issue as that was the narrowest canyon we were in all trip and it sent fine from there.

All is well in McCall. Food, bike, shop, later dinner. Tomorrow Joseph, the tram at Wallowa Lake. Got to get the wife points so I'll be good to go to Alaska in a little over 2 weeks.

Cheers
