What was scary about it? I've found mine to have extremely pleasant and predictable manners.

Bingo!

Yeah it would be super boring if everyone had as good of taste in airplanes as we do! :)

Sounds like you just needed a few axle shims to calm her down a bit, makes a world of difference on the ground handling.

Re: Flying & owning a Maule Long wing vs Cesna 180

My first(and only) aircraft search was 25 years ago.

Research revealed that a brand new Maule approximated the price of a used, 50's/early 60's 180. A layover in Georgia, a rental car; and my crew presented ourselves at the Maule factory.

Awesome place and people; they gave us a nice tour ("yessir, that's the hangar the airplane flew out of"), followed by a max performance demo flight with all 3 of us aboard. The flight began with the tailwheel hitting the runway, from the max effort rotation; and ended with a landing on the numbers. Literally by the end of the numeral.

Very impressive all around, but even at age 30 I could barely get in and out(6'4"). Deal breaker for me. Bought a '62 180. Love it, still have it.

Oh yeah, the Flight Engineer had never been in a small airplane. As the demo plane had a sold sticker on it, he suggested that if I bought one I should take it on home with me.

I'm betting there've been C120's, C150's, T-Carts, Ercoupes, and pretty much everything else with wings into the "Big Four" over the years. Lotta good pilots out there without GoPros and cameras.

Agreed...There are a lot of talented pilots out there...flying Maule's, Cessna's, Pipers, Experimental, everything. I think they are all cool. I love cessna's...I have great experiences in a Maule M7, pipers etc. I just love aviation and everyone who makes it happen anywhere. Love what you have...I have a friend who is a talented 150 pilot and he has the big quad (with pics) on his list of places he has explored. He knows energy management and is a master of density altitude etc...and he has passion for aviation along with a little crazy. Good for everyone who loves to fly...More to Do!

Is there seriously anyone out there who can afford to fly uninsured (can afford to self-insure) who will die in a ditch about not being able to find used parts easily?

If I could afford to self-insure, I would always buy new. Heck, I can barely afford a plane as things are, and I still prefer to install unused parts! #-o

I have friends who have been into Simonds with a cessna 150 and a 182. So I guess it's more about the pilot than the plane.

Re: Flying & owning a Maule Long wing vs Cesna 180

I think it would be a lot easier in a small light plane than a 185. Well, maybe not a 150 -unless it's solo very early in the morning..... with no gas.... or passenger seat.....

Plenty of Maules have been in to Mile Hi.

Hanselman rated Mile Hi as the most hazardous strip in the F.C.

I'm not convinced. And, there is nothing to do there except watch 185s and Maules come and go to say that they've been there

Not that watching planes take off and land at Mile Hi isn't fun, but I could be camping, hiking, fishing and drinking beer down at Vines or Cabin Creek instead.
