Yeah, if Rob can land his Maule at Simmons then anybody can. I think the real question is how would a Cessna have fared after Rob's 2013 landing at "High Boy?" :D

Seen a Maule M7 and a C180 both hit a tree..... C180 faired much worse, it was a bigger tree though :)

maulewaco wrote:Whee this is one reason why I wanted to share my time and money. Cessna and Maule are just different airplanes. If I wanted to Just jump from strip to strip lightly loaded the maule would be the one. Kinda like a rock crawler you take to the hills on a trailer. If I had to spend that kind of money on a Maule being I already been there done that I would now go experimental. I do not have the time to build a complete airplane and want parts on hand. I bent a plane in the BC once and was able to fly parts in to fly it out with a ferry permit. So being able to fly someones C-180 really opened my eyes on what will work for me now and down the road value. I did not post my experience to bash either aircraft, only to give real data and information from real time and money spent with changes that slapped me in the face.

That's the way I read it; just sharing your experience and opinion. Thanks again.

Simonds is such a beautiful place! Very nice maule pictures. It looks like it was a little greener than when my brother landed his stock 182 with 8's on the mains and a 6 on the nose. I'm pretty sure he had a 175# passenger with him also.

Granted this is not a 180 per se but as all superior tailwheel pilots know.... if a 182 can do it obviously a 180 can, right?

Most of all I like well balanced and value and (what if's!) More on that later. I researched Cessna 180's and like what a H model had and went out and bought one.

Welcome to the right side of history!! 8) 8) hehehe

Nice pictures of your brother's Cessna 182 at Simonds, Darin. He must be home schooled! But what about the rest of the Big 4? Let's see pictures at Vines, Dewey Moore and Mile Hi.

As long as tempers are already a bit high maybe......
Every time I have ever seen a Bearhawk, it strikes me as being a homebuilt Maule with sticks. (I'm always tempted to post "just buy a Maule" on the Bearhawk threads.) Beyond appearances, what are the similarities and/or differences? What airfoil does the Bearhawk use, and the Maule? What's the BH wingspan and wing area? In comparing similar airplanes, I've always found it useful to compare wing loading (weight divided by wing area) and power loading ( weight divided by horsepower). This doesn't account for things like airfoil, different props, etc but at least gives some idea of how they'd stack up against each other.

It's time to raise the bar here. We need a new Gold standard in what to tell guys to spend their money on.

Just buy a Pilatus Porter! 8)

I've been watching that "worst place to be a pilot" show on YouTube. I'm convinced, a Porter is the right plane for me. Just need to find someone that will pay the fuel bill.

My wife has been on at me for years to buy her a bug. Ive spent too many hours working on them, but they sure do bring a smile to my face when I drive them. Could it be that we don't all like the same things?

This. Not all of us are 6'4" and flying under gross is far more routine than over.

I still would take either. I wish I'd known you were selling your long wing maule, waco. I've been searching for one for a while. I was 4 callers late on first day one went on sale on Barnstormers. It was gone on the first call, first day.

180s scare me far more because of the monocoque and how they've all been wrecked. Tube and fabric and the right jig, I know it can be repaired right - and a lot cheaper.

I looked hard at a 180 that was owned by someone who worked at Cessna. Even he had a hard time finding parts that were reasonably priced. Stupid small stuff is crazy expensive. Maules are built with hardware store stuff - well - generic stuff that mechanic can get even if Maule goes out of business.

I'm still looking for a good one of either though. I might build a Javron cub before I can find one I'm comfortable with. Let me know if there are other long wing M7 drivers on the fence out there.... by PM if you don't mind. ;-)

My palms are a little sweaty now just thinking about flying the 180. Man I miss it!
