Nice videos ,but man was that loud! The cats stuck on the ceiling and I think there's nothing left of my speakers. May I suggest when mounting cameras outside, put tape over the mic port and use the fully enclosed case as with the Gopros.

Thats nice Rob.

What takeoff weight, Da and Prop? Stock 0-300?

And do you hit the brakes after takeoff, looks like the wheels stopped fast?

This video is proof. A Wing and a Prayer! That's what it's all about. Rob has been and is an inspiration to many of us.

Takeoff weight was probably about 1700lbs. Stock C-145 with an 80/42 prop. Not sure what the DA was, probably over 6k. I tighten the axle nut just enough to stop the tires when they are rotating. That way the tires won't settle in one spot and always be touching down at the same point.

Re: Flying & owning a Maule Long wing vs Cesna 180

Thanks, I am tempted by an 80/42, but it is all a trade off for what I do most which is fly around at sea level going places.
I just put new tires on and tore off the old balance weights: I have a noticeable judder as the wheels slow down and have taken to touching the brakes when I lift off, but I like your idea. I need to repack the bearings anyway....

Never heard of anyone going to the 8042 prop that ever considered going back. Any extra performance that can be pulled out of the O300 is worth it. The stock 170 is an excellent backcountry plane! If there is a significant design flaw, it's limited thrust during takeoff and climb. Hot and high performance can leave you quite disappointed, when you really don't want to be disappointed.

I lost 12mph in cruise switching from the 76/53 to the 80/42. With 8.00x 6 tires I went from 120mph to 108mph at 2550 rpm. On a theoretical 450sm (which is about as far as I'll fly with full tanks) cross country flight with calm winds it would take 25 minutes longer to fly to your destination with the 8042. Some of that time is made up during your climb to cruising altitude. That's not so bad if you really want the extra takeoff and climb performance.

Blown 206 w/ Flint tip tanks. Or just get a Porter.....

On second thought, 750ft @ 6500? Maybe an A-Star

Good STOL but you'll have an issue with useful load and range.

I really like the idea behind this airplane. I'm hoping they are able to make a go of it!

Posting this for a friend:

I think this one has 210 hp less than the 185. C150 with Bush STOL kit and 6's all around... not quite as prestigious as an Ercoupe but none the less....

This was not me that landed this fine specimen of an aircraft at these locations but rather one of the Legends of the Bitterroot who, for now, shall remain nameless. I don't recommend trying this in your 150... I know I never would.

I know the guy, he is home schooled and actually part of the story includes being inspired by Rob and his 170 last year on a Bob Marshall tour led by Willie Stene. Incidentally those are 5's on the mains, and 5's on the nose. The guy is nickel rub and borrows the plane in trade for maintenance.

He wants to be a Bush pilot someday, but still needs an instrument rating. A wing and a prayer. He and his Flying Hawkes buddy have a trio of strips they call the home school course that are a training ground for the back country. If you are comfortable in them, you are ready for "Nosin around in the Idaho Backcountry."

I'm sure he is not happy with these being posted as they have been held in a very tight circle. If the story was ever told he wants to give credit where it's due. The guy actually does believe a departure prayer gives additional lift.

Re: Flying & owning a Maule Long wing vs Cesna 180

More the pilot than the plane. To get the 180 to land and take off like a Maule you have to add stuff. Pponk, MT, wingX, and Sportsman. I love the 180, 185 platform, BUT! Best bang for the $$$$ is the Maule. I'm not surprised I have not seen more pics of y'all at Simmons. That is a BIG BALLS strip.
