I agree that this may be a solution, but I think you are waaaaay low in your estimate. The 650 alone is well north of $10K, G5 isn’t cheap, and install cost by Garmin installer????

Would be a nice setup though.

I agree with previous post....I think Dynon May kick Garmins butt once they get their AML expanded. And the Dynon has a better screen in my opinion.

Totally agree Mike. As far as I know, if you want certified Garmin stuff, you have to buy it through an installer and pay them to install it, which isn't cheap. Dynon on the other hand will sell their stuff to anyone, and if you have a local IA you can work with might be a bit cheaper to get installed.

Yea, I guess I didn't do enough research on how much they charge, lets amend that to 40K lol. It'd be an amazing setup, but def not necessary for most of the flying I do. Haven't seen any SkyView installs yet to really compare the two.

EDIT: Obviously haven't seen a certified G3X, but I'm betting they're pretty similar to the experimental version, with the usual reduced functionality ala the G5.

Re: Garmin G3X for Certified Airplanes

Still building up steam for the G3X option, though I might not really need it either, but I'm sure the installation charges (plus chilean customs) will open the relief valve.
Very tempting indeed, but as said here, maybe the wise choice is let the bells and whistles live and evolve in the ipad realm.

Will go for that Gnx375 anyway. Has anyone here tried the streamed Ahrs to Garmin Pilot/Foreflight? Both G3x and Gnx375 will stream.

Re: Garmin G3X for Certified Airplanes

This discussion makes me glad that I'm satisfied with the stuff in my panel right now. I can't imagine better functionality for the kind of flying I do, much of it VFR, plus some occasional reasonable IFR. Lots cheaper to keep what I have!

Re: Garmin G3X for Certified Airplanes

The G3X is a nice set up for sure. I have a 185 with a GTN 750. I've decided to go the dual G5 route. I have had the dual G5's on the plane for almost a year and I could not be happier. My panel is a mix of new and old. I still prefer to look at my analog airspeed indicator in the pattern or deep in a canyon. The next install will be the GFC500 autopilot next month. I don't have the luxury of living where I love to fly so the once a year cross country to the mountains should be much more enjoyable.

As for digital engine instruments they are in the eye of the beholder. Again I have a mix of old and new. The UGB-16 and FS-450 work great for now so I have a hard time spending money on something which provides no real gain in performance or utility.

My experience with Garmin and Garmin installers has been good. To say Garmin Authorized installers are more expensive because they are Garmin has not been an issue. I do like the seamless interface with all of the Garmin equipment which is the real reason I've gone down this path. Certainly the G3X provides a great leap in capability for any aircraft which has little to no updates. Were I to start over I would certainly consider the G3X.

My comment re: Garmin certified installers was not to suggest that they are necessarily more expensive than non Garmin installers, but rather that the poster's cost estimates were likely quite low. And, Garmin installers probably are not going to allow owner assist on installations.

Garmin has a lot of great stuff. They also are quite proud of it. Nothing wrong with that. But, you if you're planning on installing this stuff, get with a certified installer, and get a real life quote. It may bring tears to your eyes.....not because they're necessarily more expensive than the next guy, but they'll probably quote you a realistic installation number.

Re: Garmin G3X for Certified Airplanes

This is all well and good. I fly G3X Touch in my RV-8 and am in the middle of a makeover of a J model Cessna 180. I have my panel in CAD and have been trying to figure out how to fit the G3X Touch 10" screen, the portrait 7" (or even dual stacked G5's) between the top of the glareshiled and the pilot's yoke shaft. Even a TXi which is slightly shorter than the G3X can't fit within the vertical room Cessna put in the panel. Unfortunately Garmin does not offer the landscape 7" configuration as this could be a viable option.

Here is a picture of a Cessna 185 panel mockup from Aerotronics with TXi:

I have been told that starting around 1977 or so Cessna made the panels taller with a commensurate change of the glareshield. That must the version Aerotronics chose for this mockup. I also read a post on another site that says that Cessna actually dropped the control yokes down for 1977+ panels.

Has anybody been able to make modifications to either the panel, glareshield or control column to add between 1.5 to 2" of additional vertical space between the top of the panel and the control yoke for pre 1977 Cessna 180/185 panels?
