Hey iceman, we found the storm. Had snow from Garberville to San Francisco.

Made it to Palm Desert today. Had some pretty nasty driving conditions. 3 hours of torrential rain. Wipers on high at 50MPH This sucks. At PD 70* now I am all better.

The Greatest Generation

I never had the privilege of meeting my fellow Portland Fire Fighter. He retired before I was hired. This note came from one of the guys who knew him.

This is just one example of why IMO the men and women of the WWII generation will always be the greatest generation.

Email to retired Portland Fire Fighters:
If you have today's issue of the OREGONIAN you will see we have lost one hell of a guy. Marlin Clark, a recipient of a Bronze Star and Silver Star for WW 2 battles in the Pacific Theater where he was shot through the head in one battle, received less than fatal injuries, recovered from that was sent back to the front again. In his second encounter he was again wounded and required more serious medical treatment. He was then discharged and started his career at Engine 4 in the mid forties.
His bride of sixty some years, Ruth, is in a nursing home.
No Services are to be held at his request.

I worked at Engine 4 from 1994-1997

Good day...Rob

Re: Good day BCP friends

Was reading the Nall report after it was talked about in the Flying Low thread.

This was interesting.

• Amateur-built aircraft continued to
have significantly higher rates of both
fatal and non-fatal accidents than
comparable type-certificated aircraft,
suffering particularly from greater
numbers of mechanical failures and
unexplained losses of engine power.

Sounds like some builders should stick to building things that don't fly.

I've seen some things that homebuilders have "built" and you're right-- they should never leave the hangar.

Re: Good day BCP friends

I just put down the new Sport Aviation Magazine April issue published by the EAA. The same Nall/AOPA report is talked about on page 8. http://www.sportaviationonline.org/spor ... 01104#pg10

It says that the "hours flown by amateur built aircraft increased from 482,000 per year in 1995 to 983,000 in 2010, representing an increase of 104 percent. In the same period, the number of fatal accidents rose 5 percent, from 64 to 67."

It goes on to say "the EAA strongly encouraged the AOPA Air Safety Institute (Nall report) not to include the accidents and hours flown by E-LSA in with the amateur built fleet because it does not accurately reflect homebuilt aircraft totals. We continue to work with AOPA, FAA and the General Aviation Joint Steering committee to come to a common understanding regarding how to account for amateur-built saftey data."

What needs to be understood is that the E-LSA class was lumped in with the Amateur Built numbers in the Nall Report. Remember when the sport pilot rating was made law, the kits for two place powered parachutes, weight shift trikes and anything else that was over the 104 +lb/ single seat ultralights were rolled up into the E-LSA class. These kits do not conform to Amateur Built standards and according to the EAA should be reported separately and not in with traditional Amateur Built. As the EAA states it skewers the traditional amatuer built numbers on safety. I thought the difference should be pointed out here.
