Gyrocopter on the capital lawn

I'm first in line to cut the nuts off the yahoo who just did this, or am I off base?

Oh boy, more airspace you can kiss goodbye. So much for Homeland Security's security.

Re: Gyrocopter on the capital lawn

Probably just got confused on the complicated airspace restrictions there and had to land to figure it out. Surely more required training and restrictions will keep that from happening again

OK. This guy is a dipshit, an idiot, irresponsible scofflaw, criminal, etc. and deserves to be prosecuted for whatever rules were broken.

The REAL dipshits are the ones on the boob tube telling everybody that a 250 pound vehicle with 5 gallons of gas carrying an unarmed man delivering naught but a small bag of mail was a "Threat to national security"

It was a stupid stunt. Impound his craft and let everyone go home. We take things way too damn seriously in this nannified country.

I wonder how much he was inspired by Mathias Rust? If you happen to be too young to remember...

Interesting to see how different the response was in a country we all grew up thinking was over the top with ghoulish security forces. He wasn't arrested until two hours later during which some of the officers expressed how they thought he was quite brave. Gorbachev got rid of plenty of the military higher ups afterward. Who knows, maybe we'll be rid of homeland security thanks to Mr. Hughes? Yeah, maybe not.

I'm no fan of dipshit #1 that live there, but this just goes to prove how lax the security really is at the White House.

What if he did have a weapon of some sort? A 5# canister of sarin gas? Or something worse?

What I want to know is why this guy wasn't obliterated from the sky before he even got close? The SS guys on duty drunk again?

He even sent an email to the White House an hour or two before his flight detailing his plan, so "they wouldn't shoot me down."

So I guess a flight plan of sorts. Musta worked because he didn't get shot. Good points on the poison gas.

Nah....the underlying reason is..... He will now get a full retirement at club Fed. Three square, cot, free medical care, free clothing and all the attention he'll not want......

Re: Gyrocopter on the capital lawn

I think the shoot down capability against a determined adversary in DC is mostly bluff. At least aerial engagement would not likely be effective. I observed the building protected flight corridors with no wires and approaches to potential targets. The distances are short from exposure to targets. I hate to say it but given the apperant overall lack of readiness I have my doubts about security there. From the top floor restaurant at the Willard Hotel the view looks down on the snipers on the White House roof. About 350 yards. I would not sleep well in Barry's house.

Like much of our domestic "security" it only works because a trained warrior has not tried to violate the defense. The day will come. Mike

Re: Gyrocopter on the capital lawn

Boneheaded way to make the point, but I totally agree with his message. Regardless of what your own hotbutton issue may be, no change is possible without campaign finance reform--unless that change happens to benefit the .01% who control the candidates.

And there is some precedent. A guy once landed in front of the capitol building to demand payment on aircraft order he'd been stiffed on. No one arrested him. As for real security threats, if the secret service can't deal with a 20th Century gyrocopter, what are they going to do about a drone?

What if he did have a weapon? you can pretty much guarantee that it's a small one. It's a whole lot easier to put the poisongas/explosive/bioweapon in the trunk of a car. And you can get a car pretty close to a big crowd without anyone batting an eye. And you can carry a heck of a lot more... When the bad guys strike, they are NOT gonna be flying ultralight autogyros.

A 250 pound aircraft should not be considered any more dangerous than an old moped with a bad muffler.

Not saying that this a**hole wasn't a naughty boy for violating a long list of rules of which he was clearly aware.

The shoot down capability against *any* adversary is largely a bluff. If they implemented the measures necessary to stop things like this (if they even existed), they would merely assure without doubt there would be collateral damage. You can't have one without the other. The decision not to is a perfectly rational choice.

Re: Gyrocopter on the capital lawn

I just checked a gyro copter and rotary wing site, those guys are really fired up : www. rotaryforum.com The guy who built the craft before it changed hands several times is on there, commenting on the exact type of gyro it is. Some think this may be a good thing for the gyro community, most are pissed.
