Headest

Looking for suggestion/ recomendations for a new headseat. I have a DC h10-13.4 and three H10-30's. I want to make the move to ANR but there are soooo many choices! I've been a david clark fan because they have lasted so many years and thats what my grandpa had but the top 2 seem to be bose and lightspeed. Does that seem accurate? I'm also looking at used if anyone is looking to upgrade. Thanks for your input!

Im sure this has been discussed but i hate the search feature as I can never find what I'm looking for.

Re: Headest

Search is your friend. :) SInce this has been discussed many times with numerous comments posted, all I can say it pretty much comes down to personal prefrence. Having said that I have two sets of the LS Zulu.

There are four sets of Lightspeed Zulu 2's in the Wagon. The front ones have Lemo connectors so the headsets are powered by the plane. The rear are standard jack headsets so if I'm flying with a friend that doesn't have Lemos I grab them.

I'll add Lemo connectors to the SQ-2 as soon as it's down here. It is so cool not to have to worry about carrying headset batteries.

Re: Headest

I've used a set of Zulu a fair bit and really like them. My wife wears them when she comes along so I'm going to order a headsets inc anr kit for my passive set. I've heard nothing but good about them and for what they cost it is hard to go wrong.

Re: Headest

It's like trying to recommend a good pair of boots.....everybody is different and results will vary
.
I've tried David Clarks and within 30 minutes I have a headache. Seems like everybody I know loves them so it must just be me and maybe I'd get used to them.
I've also demo'd the Bose and had the same problem--headache in about 30 minutes plus I didn't think the ANR was all that great.
I then demo'd the Lightspeed Zulus and voila!!! Love them!!!! More features, better ANR, no "my head's in a vice" feeling. Love them and plan to buy a few more sets for the family when the time comes. I really like listening to music and the way they sync to my iphone for Pandora and then immediately silence with incoming comms is awesome. Also you can talk on the phone using Bluetooth. Great technology!!

Re: Headest

Zulu 2. All I've ever owned before were the cheap ones so don't necessarily rely on my experience. They're sure spendy but worth it I think.

Re: Headest

I have a pair of zulus and one set of zulu 2s. Both great and I'll continue to buy zulus. The passive on them us much better then the Bose if your batteries ever die and you forget to have extras.

Re: Headest

But if you like your DCs, convert them to ANR with a Headsets Inc. conversion. I did that about 3 years ago, and I've been 100% satisfied. I tried on a Zulu 2, but it wasn't comfortable on my bucket head. I've also tried Bose headsets in the airplane, and believe me, the HI conversion is every bit as good. It's pretty easy, if you know how to use a soldering pencil. And it's not very spendy, even if you get all the bells & whistles like I did.

I also have Oregon Aero Hushkits for my other headsets, along with their comfort earseals on all of my headsets.

Re: Headest

I was on Craigslist and saw two sets of mint Bose X headsets for 500 for both so I jumped on that. Just saying...sometimes a good deal is lurking.

Are they as good as the newer Bose or the Lightspeed? No clue.

Good enough for me though, and the fidelity using my ipod is very decent as well. YMMV.

Re: Headest

another vote for LS Zulus. but I also have a Clarity Aloft, in-ear headset that I really like. $$$ unless you can find a deal on a used set. It's not as quiet as an ANR headset, but I can wear full windstopper balaclava when it's cold or wide brim hat when it's bright sun. My wife likes them, comfortable and they don't wreck her hair....

Re: Headest

I have the Bose A20 with Bluetooth and it works great.

While flying I occasionally turn it off to see how well the noise canceling circuit is working and the difference is amazing.

If you are going to buy new, make sure you try the latest offerings from each manufacturer for a true comparison.

Re: Headest

I'm the odd man out. I've tried all of the top brands, but my ears aren't very good to begin with, and my head may be misshaped. The ANR in all of the top brands provide the same apparent benefit for my degraded hearing when their shape conforms to my head. I've found that a poorly fitting headset will "leak" a lot of background noise around the ear cups no matter how good the ANR is. So comfort, fit and cost became my primary criteria. I actually wound up with the Pilot Communications PA-1771T ANR Headset. They are as comfortable (on my head) as any headset out there. They fit perfectly to my head shape without squeezing my head and they have jacks for connecting your favorite music source. That can be helpful in case your audio panel doesn't have a music jack, or if you want to listen to different music than your co-pilot or passengers. That same connection jack can be used for adding audio to an inflight video recording, or for your cell phone. Finally, these headsets were cheap. I paid $385 each for them and I'm a very happy camper. I have an older Lightspeed ANR headset (QFR, not Zulu) that I moved to the back seat for passengers.

Re: Headest

I've used the Bose X for the last several years. I used to think they were great and thought that they were relatively equal to the Zulu 1. I bought a Bose A20 a few months ago and I think it is a way better headset all the way around than the X model. It's more comfortable, a lot quieter, music sound is awesome, and the phone connectivity works perfect.

I have no personal experience with the Zulu 2, but I have two friends here at home that tried them out and both sent them back. I know one had a problem with the phone connection. You couldn't understand what he was saying when he was talking through them. The other guy is a real picky helicopter guy, so there's no telling what he didn't like.

Re: Headest

Have Lightspeed Zulu 2, Bose A20, Bose Aviation X.

Bose A20s are lighter and seemingly have a better profile on the head compared with the Zulu 2.

The Zulu 2 does not fit my wife's head because the ear pads don't retract up as far as the Bose A20. So I wear the Zulu and she wears the A20. I prefer the A20.

Re: Headest

I'd advise starting by putting the Oregon Aero kit on your DC's, since you like them. It makes a huge difference in comfort and sound and only costs a fraction of a Zulu set. Then, if you ultimately get Zulu's, you'll have a really nice set for passengers.

I just moved up to Zulus, Very Nice listening to stereo music off the i Pad or Bluetooth phone calls I'm not supposed to make while flying. I had 2 pair of David Clamps, I mean Clarks was like putting your head in a vice after about 1 1/2 hours, I had the ANR conversion done to them and they were much quieter, If you can't afford Bose or Zulus and can take the pressure convert.

I bought the kits from Spruce with intentions of doing the conversion but ended sending them to these guys
http://splashurl.com/mmxeeu6 they charged $50 plus shipping.

There is a pretty good used market for Zulus, Bose and DC's on Ebay if you're patient you can pick up good equipment 1/2 price.
