Hooper hot springs 2012

There will be a fly-in attended by the Colorado Pilots Association to the Sand Dunes Pool, a hot springs located in Hooper, Colorado, on Saturday, March 10, from 11-3 or so. They have a great pool, great view, and great food.

I have a three bedroom apartment in Del Norte that is currently unoccupied. If anybody wants to hang around for a few days, have at it.

Any idea what the status is of the airstrip on the other side of CR63?

There's another airstrip? The main airstrip in just NE of the pool across Cty Rd 63. PM Lee for details, but the main airstrip is about 2500ft long, hard packed dirt and in good condition (if it snows, it will be in poor condition).

Re: Hooper hot springs 2012

Happy to have the strip, but sure would be nice if they could make it green like the area around it. Not may green strips around here

That's the strip I was asking about--it's on the other side of 63 from the pool, right? :)

If you zoom in on google earth you can see a plane parked at the west end of the strip.
Landed there 2 weeks ago and every thing was good.

A video of the approach and pool.

With any luck, there should be a windsock on the east end of the runway prior to the fly-in.

Hooper hot springs 2012

So while trying to find where this fly in was I came across this place on google earth. Curiosity is killing me. The large piles of scrap tires tells me maybe just a junk yard, but what's up with the sweet snake shaped pond? Any of you Colorado guys know the story on this place?

Re: Hooper hot springs 2012

Don't know if you saw/remember this, but a few years ago they were havin a problem with a gator in some lake, I think in the LA area, and this guy goes over to capture it. Don't think he did, but got quite a bit of publicity out of it.

Re: Hooper hot springs 2012

First developed as a commercial Talapia farm. The owners found that getting rid of tons and tons of fish guts was expensive and hard to do. So they started to raise 'gators on the side. Now a first rate tourist trap that makes way more money off the 'gators than they ever thought of with fish. Even a short run Discovery (maybe The Learning Channel) reality series "Colorado 'Gators". They hold a 'gator fest every spring and you can take a class on wrestling the critters!
