No I got he 56 182 with a stock wing and added the Sportsman Stol.

Hard to knock Mr Horton as he was kind of a pioneer in this area. I have had a couple of good talks with him on the phone and he is still pretty darn sharp. He is no longer a major decision maker at this point.

Re: Horton

My 170 had a Horton kit on when I bought it. BUT, it did not have the flap gap seals put on.
It did have the aileron gap seals which worked fine.

Apparently a Horton person said not to use them for backcountry flying.

When I did a lot of "finish" work on my 170 I asked my AP/IA (Vern Miller) about the flap gap seals.
He said do NOT put on the Horton flap gap seals because when you find you do not like them for backcountry work you will have to DRILL them out and re-paint. He said if you must TRY flap gap seals get the Knot2U version as they can be easily removed with a screwdriver. Glad I listened to him.

Flap gap seals will not allow for a steep decent. MTV and or EZ have already explained why.
The flap gap seals limited my decent rate to around 400 ft/min when often need 600 to 700 ft./min.
I recently sold the 170 with the flap gap seals still wrapped with a flannel sheet.

Nuff said - I hope.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.

Re: Horton

My plane came with Horton flat gap seals. I installed the Sportsman Stol and left on the flap gap seals. I talked to Mr Horton and Mr Stein about them and neither one recommended them but neither one stated that they should be removed. I have no problem doing steep descents. I will leave the plane the way it is cus it works so good for my mission. I will admit that I have no desire to enter Valdez competition.

I have no desire to land at Mile High either no matter how bitchin the tee shirt looks on me posing casually in front of my plane.

I will be making an offer on a hangar at Bandon, OR that has a pos home made bi fold door on it. If I get the hangar I will demo the bi fold and install a Horton. If offer not accepted I will build one and install a Horton.

I bought a house at Bandon but will not have a thread about it on this forum showing my every move either. Nobody will care what color the paint in the hall closet is.

Re: Horton

I need to add one more thing. I started this thread for a little fun. I am pleased that so many folks cared enough about me to plead that I reconsider my choice of what they thought was a stol kit. Zane got so excited that he made a reply about it to a reply that I made on a different thread.

I just turned 69 years old and I need folks to look out for me.

Re: Horton

I have the Knots2U flap gap seals--easy to remove if needed, but I have had no issues with them, and they do increase my cruise speed by about 5-6 knots--that makes up for the 5-6 knots that my droopy tips knock off the cruise speed. :)

BTW, 69 is not old. Been there, done that already.
