How far to your hangar?

I have to drive 21 miles each way to my hangar from the house. It didn't used to be too bad but it's a 2 lane highway that is a busy cut off between two major freeways. They now have it tore all to heck doing a ton of construction and the speed limit is only 45mph. Most of the time your in a long line of traffic going 35. It takes me a solid 30 minutes each way. There is another airport with hangars about 8 miles from me but they have a 3 year waiting list and the price is more than double. That drive is getting really painful. I have to constantly remind myself that I'm going FLYING during the entire drive. Just curious have far you guys drive to go flying?

I walk there or hop on the 4 Wheeler if I feel lazy or need to haul gas.

Re: How far to your hangar?

AvidFlyer, You need a bigger yard??? One of the good things being a lowly paid farmer, is land. My hangar is about 300 yards, but it is across a busy road. Sometimes I land in the cow pasture out front, which is 100 feet from the front door. The first 6 months after I bought a plane, and before a strip, I drove about 30 minutes like you. That extra hour prevented a lot of flying. Now, if there is a nice sunset, and I want to watch it just a little longer,...just jump in the plane and watch.

Re: How far to your hangar?

I drive 4.5 miles house to hanger, if I'm not flyin I'm tinkering and I've always got cold beer there if I'm not flying. When I'm done flyin I always =D> reward myself to a cold one if late in the day. When I fly glider it takes me 2 hours to drive to Warner Springs 2 home I try to fly at least as long and as far as I have to drive to get there and home, 4 hrs and/or 180 miles.

To damn far; about 15 miles and 25 minutes. Sure wish I could fly off my own 60 acres, but it's too hilly and treed.

Re: How far to your hangar?

I drive 3.8 miles, three stop signs and one light, all country roads. I find it does not factor in my flying decision at all. Sometimes I drive down to the hangar just in case I might want to go flying.

There is no doubt I fly much more than when my plane was 20 or 30 minutes away.

Re: How far to your hangar?

Since I made the first flight in April 2007 I have been hauling my kitfox on a trailer about 10 miles back and forth to the airport. I have found that trailering an airplane is not what it's cracked up to be. There is a hell of a bunch of monkey motion involved.

I reciently took advantage of an offer to keep my airplane in a hangar at the same airport. I'm in seventh hog heaven now. Drive down, poor some gas in, preflight and hit the switch. land, push it in the hangar and head home. Nice!

I'm 6 miles, 15 minutes. About half the trips I make to town I go right by, so, even if I'm not planning on flying, sometimes it just happens. :P

Re: How far to your hangar?

Six miles home to hangar, backroads, 15 minutes. Impromptu hangar parties are our specialty here, with cold beer in the fridge, a grill in most hangars, and someone usually hopping rides.

Baloney is still baloney, no matter how thin you slice it.

Re: How far to your hangar?

The building permit called it a storage building. They wanted to know what I was going to store and I said stuff. :^o :^o :^o The storage building is 350 ft from the back door. :D :D

Re: How far to your hangar?

5 Miles on the south side of the valley through town. Two stop signs and two stop lights. If I go the long way it's 6 miles, only one stop sign. I can't see the hanger at the airport from my house but I can see the rotating beacon right next to my hangar.

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

Re: How far to your hangar?

You guys are really lucky... :D
For my wife and me it's a 100 mile drive.
At least it's mostly German Autobahn and I've got a quite fast car... 8)

Hopefully we'll have a new hangar from January on which is noticeably nearer - it will then be "just" 70 miles away.

Cheers,

Oliver

Re: How far to your hangar?

25 minutes non rush hour. Dont even try at rush hour. Long for living next to my plane. Soon, maybe. The most hazardous part of my flight is getting to the airport.

Re: How far to your hangar?

About 40 minutes from Emmett, Idaho to the Caldwell Airport. Pain in the rear when the group of pilots want to be wheels up crack of dawn in the summer. But it's worth it to have the plane in a nice new hangar. And most all my flying buddy's are hangared there too. So it's easy to get help with something or borrow tools, etc.

Emmett Airport has hangars and tie downs. I even rented the city hangar for one month, but moved out by the end of that month because I didn't like the way the airport manager handled a situation involving the hangar I was renting.

Re: How far to your hangar?

52 miles one way down city streets and 2 lane rds (about 1:15).

I can't complain too much because it's free hanger space and plenty of peace and quite. If it were closer my fuel bill would be much higher too.

7 miles and 16 minutes for me. Usually takes longer on the way home if a stop for wings and beer is in order.

Re: How far to your hangar?

35 miles/40 minutes one way. No hanger space closer, and the little airport that is airplane home is much more friendly to us little guys.

Hangar is in the back yard. 2200' of grass, 50' obstacle from the south.

Pure fun :D
