Are you sure you cannot get a safe airstrip out of 60 acres?

The next hurdle is to keep the neighbors and the county happy.

The neighbors are the key to a strip on our property. An airstrip requires a conditional use permit, and you pay for the hearing win or loose. Unfortunately, our neighbors have been very uncooperative on some other dealings with the county, and I'm quite sure they would fight this. The least disturbing orientation to the neighbors would create a one way strip, 600 feet long, that would run under powerlines at midfield. Oh yeah, it would be cross wind to the prevailing winds. Yuck.

Tom,
If you have a site that would work, which is completely your decision, and if you are in an EFU (exclusive farm use) zone, I would urge you to go for the conditional use permit. Personal use airstrips are provided for in the zone. Your neighbors, whether they like you putting in a strip or not, have to prove how the intended use will adversely effect their farm operation. The county, while they have to consider all the objections, are bound to look only at the criteria as it applies to the farm zone. A trip to the planning office to confirm, or disconfirm, this might pay you dividends. There are several other hoops to jump through, with the Feds and the State Department of Aviation, but both these agencies most likely will want to help you with the process, particularly the State.
Good luck,
Phil

Re: How far to your hangar?

In summer my plane is parked at the dock in front of my house...ready to go. Its nice to have it so close and I'm sure I fly more because of it. In winter it sits on a snow covered field on its ungainly pontoons, looking sad....waiting for spring.

I have skis, but they haven't been used for many years. Its tempting to put them on though. :)

Re: How far to your hangar?

Hanger? Here in the east, population density prohibits newcomers to an municipal airport from getting a hanger. Of course on a fixed income I can't afford the $300 per month rent anyway.

But I'm tied down not 50 yards from some nice ones!

Eight miles from my house to the hangar. Three miles from work to hangar.

Cheers!

Re: How far to your hangar?

Three hundred ft. to my nearest hanger, 325 ft. to the runway. I often taxi the plane right up to the back door to the house to wash it with water from the yard hydrant. Forty one years ago, I had the local Gov't approve my strip that is 100 X 4200 Ft. and get the Feds to approve it ! It was at the time just luck, that I got it approved, as today it would be impossible with all the Zoning in effect !

Re: How far to your hangar?

My earlier post on this subject is how I'm set up now that my house is built, I stumbled upon these two pictures showing how it was earlier! Three years ago I moved onto 40 acres of bare ground in the middle of building my S-7S, and building my shop with attached hanger was of course the first order of business. The first winter I lived in a 30 year old piece of sh*t travel trailer, coming up on the second brutal winter (and there's a reason a ski area is right behind me, you can see it in my avatar) since the hanger was completed I figured screw it, I'm moving in. The plane was still under construction in the shop upstairs, so after some carefull measuring I framed up a very temporary "apartment" around the space required for the yet to be completed plane. Moving into the hanger, with its radiant floor heat and solid concrete and super insulated walls (with a full bathroom inc laundry upstairs in the shop) was heaven after the tin box with wheels. Though "rather cramped" it did the job for that winter, the next summer I got busy on the house AND finished the plane (and worked full time at my usual crane business) so for a few months there I was living right next to the plane.....now that I'm all set up and everything is built I can laugh about it, but hey you do what you have to be able to enjoy the flying lifestyle, its always worked for me!

"Out the house door, down the steps, across to the hanger door is maybe 70'."

Good for you, Courierguy. It's nice to see someone actually living their dream.

Here's wishing you and your family all the best.

I spent a couple of months living in Boise and traveled around the state quite a bit. Where in Idaho do you call home?

Re: How far to your hangar?

Courier,

You have the life. I never thought of Inkom as much of a paradise but now I see its glory! Quite a compound you have up there. We drive by you a few times a year as the in-laws live in Swan Valley. I changed a tire on you off-ramp on Christmas Eve a few years ago after being chased off the road by a semi on Malad summit (Pat.. #-o #-o was that you? ).

I'll be driving by the day before Thanksgiving and hopefully I spot the green Courier chasin' coyotes nearby.

May this winter find you @ room temperature-

Nope....not me!!! Safety and professionalism is my #1 goal!! :D I drive a big huge Yamaha billboard, so I know better. I've been jacked with myself a few times here and there. Even by other semi drivers!! Truckin isn't what is used to be these days.

About 200' from my back door to the hanger door. Open the doors and taxi straight out to the 2500' grass strip. Quite nice actually.

I love it when I'm talking to a couple of my flying buddy's about differant strips (mostly tight/short Cub type strips) they fly into in the backcountry that they don't want anybody to know about. It's always about the same answer when you ask where they are.

"up there by Notelling Creek"

"up the Notelling canyon, then land along the Notelling creek" and so on....
