Out the house door, down the steps, across to the hanger door is maybe 70'. One nice perk is being able to have the idling/warming up plane sitting there, while you make a quick trip back into the house for a last minute bathroom break! Unpacking/packing after or before a trip is a lot more convinent also. The only drawback to living so close to your hanger and airstrip is it quickly spoils you...I've been doing it for 30+ years and can't imagine doing it otherwise. On my mountainside strip its a real safety factor, being able to eyeball conditions way before flight, much better then just showing up and taking off. Like right now.... turning my head and looking out the office window shows the wind is 20+mph, and direct cross, no fun flying today!
I rent space for my crane biz down in the valley 20 miles away, I SHOULD live in town, on flat ground, right next to my crane yard, and build a house right there.....but where would I land??? My avatar shows a rare maintenance visit of my crane at my home shop, but no way can I drive it up and down the mountain on a routine basis. As usual, flying comes first!!
