How's your weather?

I"m hunkered down in a hotel near Midway airport in Chicago. Fortunately, I don't have any reason to go outside today. I don't have the right clothing for this!

Most of my work trips for the last three days have been cancelled. My first leg tomorrow has been cancelled.

I'm reminded of two sayings: "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing."

and "There is no such thing as cold. There is only less heat."

That last one is true. Ask any scientist.

I hope some of you are in places with more heat and flyable weather.

Pretty nippy up Milwaukee way, too. Even the bars are closed. In Wisconsin. Unheard of! I’ll certainly be watching the world from the warm side of the glass today.

Re: How's your weather?

It's a balmy 24 degrees F here in SC. "Feels like" temp of 20. Nowhere near as cold as you guys up there, but quite cold by SC standards.

Re: How's your weather?

I actually had a work trip to Chicago today. We canceled it on Monday due to the storms pushing across. Figured they’d be pretty shut down and the travel would be wasted.

What a bunch of weenies!!! My thermometer outside was pegged AT THE BOTTOM this morning. The lowest reading is -50!! Official report said -39 and I saw the windchill listed as -69 last night before I went to bed. I'll just say it was a wee bit nipply outside! LOL

Yep, the weather around most of my airplane is 65 degrees, winds calm, ceilings 9 feet

Re: How's your weather?

My list of things to do today:

Throw a few coins Zane's way so he can keep the lights on and fix his broken airplane.

Enjoy Chicago ..... through the window as I stand next to the thermostat.

Think about people in Minnesota and Michigan since they are still wearing their shorts while I shop on-line for a a new parka.

Spend some time in conversation with Nick Offerman as I watch his Yule Log video on youtube. Perhaps Hammer and Whee, in preparation for their fly-in, will watch at the same time and we can enjoy the engaging dialogue together.

Migrate down to the hotel cantina about 5 pm.... perhaps I'll take my laptop so Nick O. and I can continue our conversation over some brown liquid.

Holy crap! I suppose that could only be bested by some anecdote from the Fairbanks area.

The limit of my experience is about -10 F while skiing Jackson Hole several years ago, and that felt brutal enough, even a little frightening the power of the cold to suck your life energy. Can't imagine -50.

Yeah, that’s pretty cold. My personal low was -52 F in Fairbanks, but I didn’t spend a long time outside that day.

If you were bottomed out, I’d bet you were down there a pretty good ways below -50!

Sounds like a good day to reorganize the spice rack, or some other long duration indoor chore.

At what point does it get so cold that you don't notice any additional temp change? I'd assume there has to be a point where you don't notice another 10 degree drop..

Oh it's amazing. From -30C to minus -40C there is a big drop. After that I dont notice as much, but that's because I try to avoid being outside after that...

Re: How's your weather?

Currently pissy, forcast to continue pissy until the weekend when it is supposed to get colder again, single digits.

I think the coldest I have ever been in was at Chandalar pipeline camp, somewhere south of -50 but bright and sunny.

Re: How's your weather?

53 degrees, had to wear a flannel shirt over my t-shirt to cut the chill :D I sprayed 700 acres this afternoon, plane flew like it was on rails, a wonderful departure from the usual summer flying antics.

Re: How's your weather?

It was about +50F here yesterday. We've had a mild winter in my corner of BC.

Supposed to drop down to about 10F in a few days. It will be sunny, but pretty certain it will be windy as hell.

Once upon a time, when I was young and felt invincible, I spent a couple of nights in a tent at minus 54 F while caribou hunting. Even my eskimo hunting partner was chilly, though he refused to admit it.

Nice. 28 degrees, little wind. Spend the whole day in a thin merino wool shirt and still sweated while climbing.

Just got home from 3 weeks in Arizona and Socal. it was 70-80 degrees most days. Lots of hiking, Barrett Jackson collector car auction. Got to visit some BCP buddies. Flying home on Alaska it was -74 at 38000MSL. Back to the crap Oregon weather. ho hum. Keep warm out there.
