Husky A-1B Rebuild
Aircraft building and project-level overhaul forum -- Kitplanes, experimental amateur-built, homebuilding, or even restoration of certified aircraft.
Hello all - new member here.. wanted to share our current project in the shop
Few months back this we were introduced to this project and decided to move on it. Airplane fits the mission we wanted and we can’t be more excited to get her back in the air! So far in the span of about 2 months we’ve gotten the airplane home - engine, propeller and avionics disassembled and in for overhaul and the fuselage stripped to the tubes ready for the jig. As of last week both wings disassembled and leading edges removed, new leading edge ribs and spars ordered. This being just our hobby and not a day job we are all exciting with the progress we have made so far.
We’ve put a few airplanes back in the air before (C185, Pitts S2B, Citabria 7ECA) but if anyone out there has any Husky or float (Wipline 2100) specific building advice we are all ears! First time rebuilding either of those.
Thanks - Zach
(Like I said - new guy here... trying to add pictures but struggling.)

Welcome. I'm excited to see your rebuild.
It easy. Use our gallery or your favorite photo host, works the same.

What is the extent of the damage that was done to this? No damage to the prop or engine cowling that I can see but looks like damage to the leading edge of the wings?
5200 marine adhesive is the preferred sealant for float repair. If you need to replace large panels there is a "tape" that goes in the lap joint then 5200 on the rivets.
good luck.

I have an A1-B and the guys at Husky to include the owner Stu, have always been awesome to deal with. Nothing but good things to say. Have dropped in several times and changed my own oil in their parking lot and taken tours and every question is answered. As well when we see them at OSH they treat us like family. Great source for you.I would use it if I were you. Good luck on the build. I love mine.

Prop and engine so far are clean. Prop is in for overhaul more as a precaution and the engine is in for sudden stoppage inspection before we reassemble with new bearings.
Thanks for the tips on the float repair. Largest issue is the when the walk over wire got tugged out it took about a 3x2 section of skin with it, otherwise just one other minor 1/2” hole. Lucky for us we know the guys at Wipaire pretty well - they pointed us to this project.

Did your project come from Traverse City, MI. I think I saw the new video and like most it was in pretty good shape until the guys with the crane showed up and picked the airplane up by the prop. Almost all of that wing damage came from rushing the recovery not the flip.

Tim - The airplane came out of Rhinelander WI... so near Traverse City. You wouldn’t be able to send me that video would you? (Maybe I don’t want to see it)
Doesn’t surprise me at all that the recovery job potentially caused more damage than the crash itself. Just like one of our Pitts projects...

I did a google search for May 8, 2017 plane crash Cedar Lake and found video of the plane I remembered. After reviewing the photos I don't think it is your project. Very sad video.

Actually yes - the airplane we own now was Betsy’s. That article however is not hers.
You must know Betsy?

That is 100% true... everyone I talk to says “oh that’s Betsy’s airplane” it’s famous I guess... on that note you wouldn’t happen to know where the landing gear is for “Betsy’s airplane” do you? Or anyone? When we picked the airplane up it only had floats and I spent the morning calling the dealership, CWA, RHI and minocqua Flying service trying to track it down. My hunch is Wipaire has it - they just need to find it. Anyways any info is helpful at this point!
