Oh damn, not another reason to stalk someone via SPOT. Enjoy every ounce of the experience. Ask every question of every person along the way. I found that to be the best part of my adventure. You're coming along nicely. Didn't get pinched at the border. That's a good start.

Re: I'm launching for Alaska in a Cub tomorrow

Hey everybody, thanks for all the posts and PM's. I'm really thankful for all the support and offers of hospitality.

I shot a few photos prior to launch today while we were loading up, then flew the first leg of the trip as PIC. Of course, having done this a few times before, Brad gave me quite a bit of backup and support for the procedural stuff in crossing the border and landing my first airport outside the US. I made the best 737 landing you can imagine at what is the equivalent to a Class D airport here at Kamloops, and was greeted with a minor reprimand by Kamloops radio after pulling off the runway for my pattern entry. #-o Hello Canada!

Customs was a breeze though, and we unloaded, fueled, and headed out for some beer and poutine at the hotel. See you all tomorrow.

We're big boys, both over 6 foot. Lots of gear including the required 2.5 lb axe, but not the fishing net. We do have triscuits and fruit snacks though.

I've always read about the famed load carrying capacity of Super Cubs, and the hype it true. If you can fit it in, it will legally carry it. 2,300 lb max gross.
Image

Beautiful day, not exactly smooth air but I'll take it.

I think Kamloops is my favorite name ever for a town.

Re: I'm launching for Alaska in a Cub tomorrow

Kamloops radio called my pattern for me because they were making room for an air carrier flight. Standard pattern is different on that side of the border but I can't recall a circumstance where it was an issue.

Careful...visits over there could be expensive...

When Bart showed us around it was hard not to compare the gleaming perfection in the shop to the more industrial user appearance of our FWF...

Could any of you experts give a little more information on the Trench Route?

From Google Earth, it looks like the scenery would be quite amazing.

Re: I'm launching for Alaska in a Cub tomorrow

Zane,

NEVER tie an airplane down with chains! Especially if there is any slack in the chains. When the wind causes the wing to lift, and the travel of the wing meets the end of the loose chain, all the shock is transferred to the strut attach area. Damage can and has resulted in the past in airplanes (Super Cub's too) that have led to fatal failures. Use rope that you bring along. Tie the rope to the bottom link of the chain or base of tie down if enough room exists. Just a friendly heads up. :)

Really enjoying reading about your adventure!!

Re: I'm launching for Alaska in a Cub tomorrow

California has chains everywhere for tiedowns. Gave me a nervous tic until I realized it just doesn't blow over 50 so they don't see it as a problem. But chain tiedowns in Alaska break airplanes.

MAU MAU...

The trench is something I have not seen. The time of year and the distance conspired to make it out of our operating parameters. Not sure what the range is for a top cub but the distance between fuel at either end can be a limiting factor for lots of planes...including mine.

Re: I'm launching for Alaska in a Cub tomorrow

A chain anchor rode can snap a 20,000 LBS test bollard in moderate seas. In Force 4 and over nylon anchor rode is needed or the shocks will destroy the deck and ground tackle on our steel sailboat. Feeling a chain tighten in seas and swells is an uncomfortable feeling. Very dangerous.

Mariners learned a long time ago chain under certain loading conditions (loose to tight generally) is extremely dangerous.

I believe, after reading posts on this website, aircraft tie downs in strong winds should be Nylon ( NOT Dacron or Polypropylene ) . 100 % Nylon is my choice.

Do not use polypropylene! It does not stretch and dies in the Sun quickly. A guy in Hawaii used polypropylene to tie down the tail on a hand prop and lost the airplane!

Edit: I recommend three strand not linear core or braid Nylon. Failure and stretch is easier for me to detect.

Does Prince George have one too, or are you thinking of Whitehorse?

Re: I'm launching for Alaska in a Cub tomorrow

Ditto on the chains comment from Kurt. Chain tiedowns cost a gentleman in Anchorage his life a number of years ago.

After that accident, everyone started looking at the strut attach points on Cubs in AK. The cub I was flying at the time had been tied with chains (in Kodiak) before I got there. One of the front strut attach fittings was cracked badly, the other was bent......

I NEVER tie down with chains...it doesn't take a hurricane to do that kind of damage....spring in the mountains can offer some gusty afternoon winds.

The DC 3 windsock is in Whitehorse.

Re: I'm launching for Alaska in a Cub tomorrow

We're carrying ropes for tiedowns but maybe someone should write to the FAA about the thousands of airports that have chains for tiedowns, sounds like a bad deal come to think of it.

Another short flying day today, ending with us in Prince George. The weather has been pretty good the entire way thus far, but the next little leg over to Fort St John is supposed to be quite scenic, so we're waiting for clearer skies to be able to shoot photos and video. It's nice to be on a leisurely program. Jeremy, I talked to Jamee (email) but she was quite a ways ahead of us, scooting along toward Tok.
