I Pulled The Trigger

With sincere apologizes to Aryana, hope he'll still chat with me I pulled the trigger on an 0-360 today that was just to good of a offer to turn down. The Conti is still my first internal combustion love affair but at 50 lbs. lighter for similar HP its hard to mount a serious argument against the Lycoming.

Look out rabbit hole here I come

What you doing with your old 300? Does it already have an X on the serial # for the OM?
And congrats on the 360! Gonna be sweet!

Re: I Pulled The Trigger

In all honesty I'd have to go and look, that's a bit embarrassing to admit. I'll be at the hanger tomorrow and will take a picture. I was facing a full top overhaul, exhaust work etc. so it just made sense to do the change. It all happen very quickly, the 0-360 has offered to me today at a very appealing price with only 450 on it since a full shop overhaul. Its has all the accessories included with it other than an exhaust but I would have needed that anyway.

Very nice! Well, I'm on the hunt for a decent 0-300. Top is easy for me, so dibs on yours if you are going to sell it! Hoping the X got missed... haha.

Makes it “doable” for me otherwise I’d never be able to go down that rabbit hole.

Re: I Pulled The Trigger

What kind of paperwork/inspections are required to change motor configurations in Owner Maintenance?
A friend of mine thought he might do something similar but he is not sure what TC needs to have done.
Very interested in this project.

Re: I Pulled The Trigger

I'm always reluctant do layout MY understanding of governmental policy or procedure given its just that, MY understanding. So here's a reference for your due diligence. In addition I would suggest discussing it with your local TC area inspector for his/her buy in.

You do need to consider a few "configuration" restrictions from the very beginning; no greater than 200 hp, the prop must be fixed pitch, no retractable undercarriage (i.e. anphib floats, hydraulic wheel skis), no more than 4 seats, no advanced systems (i.e. pressurization).

There is one "operational" restriction that may put some off the OM C of A option, no travel outside of Canada. The OM C of A doesn't meet with internationally recognized standards therefore such a certified airplane may only operate with Canada. A final note worth mentioning, some feel it negatively effects resale value in so much as the resale market is now limited to Canada.

If you are a COPA member you will find additional information thru the link above as well.

Re: I Pulled The Trigger

You will LOVE the power on floats! Trust me. Do some research on props. I prefer the CS but if your regs require fixed, it’ll still be really nice.

Do you have a prop figures out already Bryce? If not I'd highly recommend the Whirlwind GA. Very nice, light, and efficient.

Re: I Pulled The Trigger

I have a Catto on my 0-300 and I really like it so was planning another one but longer of course. I might have it fined out a bit more for acceleration, cruise isn't a concern for me at all.

Yes. The rule specifies "in flight adjustable" for what is not allowed. So depending how loosely you want to read that, having an electric adjustable prop that is placarded for "ground use only" could technically be legal.

Re: I Pulled The Trigger

I only need take off and climb performance, most of my flights are two hours or less so cruise performance isn’t’ worth chasing after. Any pitch changed mechanism just becomes a maintenance consideration and a potential point of failure.
