Who do you use for insurance? Who has the best rates?

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Re: Insurance Rates

My underwriter is Global. I don't think it matters much who your broker is as long as they search all the underwriters for the best deal. Some brokers probably add more than others on top of the underwriter's cost.

Unless something has changed ( if it has please let me know), but if one broker contacts an underwriter for a quote for your coverage then that underwriter will not quote any other broker for your coverage. For example if AOPA contacts Global and then you go to another broker that broker cannot get a quote for you from Global. As I said, this may have changed and if it has I would like to know.

Re: Insurance Rates

Broker matters. Is switched brokers and my plan dropped $200 for the same coverage from the same company.

Re: Insurance Rates

whee is correct. I use Ladd Gardner because he could get me insurance on the SQ-2 that covers my off-airport flying without costing me a fortune.

Re: Insurance Rates

I insured my C150/150TD through Regal. I don't know if it's because he sorta specializes in Skywagons but when I priced insurance for my new 180, Bill White had a bit lower price. Avemco was waaaay out of the ballpark on that one BTW.

Re: Insurance Rates

Avemco is the only one not using brokers--it's direct sell. I went to them when AIG wanted to drop my hull coverage to much less but jack the premium. So far no complaints, and that's been about 11 years now.

Re: Insurance Rates

I use avemco, knowing they are significantly more than others. The reason being they are the only ones I found that cover hurricane damage. Other insurers would only provide $500 to relocate the plane. The relocation fee would only be paid if the storm made landfall at my home base, which by that time would be too late to decide to fly away. Plus, my job doesn't always afford me the time/availability to fly the plane out of harms way, so for as long as I live on the gulf coast, Avemco it is. Once I move away and no longer care about hurricanes I'll go shopping again.

I use Bill White insurance brokers in Corona Ca. Full rate for my glider $1400 Per year on $40,000 hull value $1 million liability $8000 coverage for my trailer.

Half rate for my Skywagon through their Multi aircraft ownership discount program $750 on $90,000 hull value $1 million liability.

Re: Insurance Rates

Another Bill White Ins. customer here. Started with them when I bought my Supercub a couple years ago. At first, the underwriter wanted 2 hours dual in a supercub before they would insure me with about an hour logged in super cubs, but I convinced them to consider recent experience in a Rans S-7 as a similar type (where would you go to get 2 hours dual in a Supercub anyways  ), as my cub was getting the engine rebuilt, and wasn't about to spend the first 2 hours on a rebuilt engine doing touch-and-go's. As it turned out, it wouldn't have mattered as the rebuilt engine only lasted 29 hours, but thats another story.

Now I insure my Skywagon with them. First year was about $1400 for a $75,000 hull value. Second year they quoted the same price, but I called and asked for a discount for 100+ hours in type, and they obliged and got the premium down to $1228. I'm happy with that...

The actual underwriter I can't recall (no big name), but there are no exclusions, and good for Alaska/Canada too.

Re: Insurance Rates

One thing to bear in mind with AVEMCO (and I do insure with AVEMCO) is that if you complete an FAA Safety program (many offered by AOPA, EAA, etc) AVEMCO will give you a 5% reduction in your rate. If you also do a WINGS phase, they'll give you another 5% break. And, they're pretty flexible on those....most legitimate safety programs will suffice. I renewed my CFI and asked them if that would work....yep.

Best rates I could find. They're a bit picky on what they insure, and they're a direct underwriter. So, there's never a down side to getting a quote from a broker and another from AVEMCO.

Be VERY careful, however, to compare apples to apples when comparing policies. A lot of pilots have bought "bargain" policies, only to find out they weren't such a bargain after all.

Re: Insurance Rates

I had a policy with Avemco and at the time I got one of their marketing ploys was a 10% discount at renewal if I was accident free. No accidents, and at renewal time, here came the bill and it was for the same amount as the first year. I called & asked about my 10% discount, and the reply was "uh.....the price went up 10% so your discount is already in there". Yeah right. I called another outfit and went with them, even though it actually cost me a little more. I hate liars.

Re: Insurance Rates

I switched to Avemco this year (first three years through Falcon--the EAA broker) and love them!

Let me tell you why:

1. previously, I had to pay the whole year in advance; now, I get to pay quarterly if I want, via automatic CC deductions (and they let me know when the "time" is coming up);

2. previously, if I wanted to speak Directly to the company, I couldn't (I was even rudely told so, once!) , and had to call the broker; now, Avemco IS the company and I can speak directly to them, in a heartbeat, if I need to;

3. previously, after I paid my dough for 1 full year, I was lucky to get a copy of the policy in 6 weeks; now, with Avemco, the policy is in my hands before the insured period even starts; and

4. previously, when I finally got the new policy each year, it was always more than 100 pages of legalsleeze which took a law degree to understand (and was clearly written for the benefit of the company--not me!); now my policy with Avemco is a "refreshing" 10 or 12 pages, written so my 10-year-old grand daughter could understand it.

And I'm only paying about $10 more a month than for the previous junk!

I rest my case...

Re: Insurance Rates

I agree. I'm with Avemco as well. A few other selling points:

- They were the most friendly for a low tailwheel time pilot, offering immediate policy rate reductions when I hit 25 and 50 hours of total TW time, prorated from the moment I called them.

- They've been super responsive to endless requests from the City for proof of insurance for the hangar I'm in.

- They're less than the best quote I got through AOPA.

One rumor I heard about Avemco is that they wouldn't cover accidents that happen when intentionally landing off-airport. But, I've read the policy from cover to cover and see no such exclusion. From their Q&A:

Q: Does your policy have any exclusion against landing on a private grass strip?
A: No, Avemco's policy does not have any exclusion against landing on a private grass strip or any other surface, regardless whether or not an emergency has occurred.

Time to go play!

Re: Insurance Rates

Just renews with Starr through Aircraft and Marine Ins. I have used them for the past 5 years. Justin Wulf is a great guy and has worked hard for me. I have beem with AIG and Starr, neither have off airport exclusions. Premium was $552 for the year
