Re: Insurance vs getting old

Just purchased C185 with my son (500 hr. PP, no TW Time), me (9k ATP, 100-150 hr TW 20 yrs ago). Five companies, one wouldn't take me because of age (76)- USAIG, one wouldn't take him because of experience. The others were all within 800.00 of each other and expensive. I took the company that insures my other aircraft even though it cost more. As we age I think experience with one company helps. They required 5 hrs of TW dual for both of us. My opinion is that no one should be flying a C185 with 5 hrs of dual-he got 20 and I got about 10 from experienced instructors (and I'm still a long way from comfortable).

"As we age I think experience with one company helps." Bingo!!!

Four years ago I retired and being frugal (cheap) I had enough money to buy a two seater TW S-LSA (now converted to E-LSA). I hadn't flown in 25y years and had less than 5 hrs TW time with <100 TT. Insurance for training, requiring 10hrs in make and model was $1800 which seemed reasonable considering my time. The next year it was mid 1600s. The next mid 1400s. This year I was quoted mid 1500s. I went looking around. By now I am still <150 TT and 55TW and 42 in make and model. Most would not even quote me and the only one that did was twice as much. So yeah, maybe if you are 40 and have a lot of hours you can peruse the different companies but when you are 70+ I think you will be stuck with "dancing with who brung ya" or just buy liability and self insure the hull. I could get away with that with my simple plane but if I had a "dream" plane like a 170 180 horse or a 180, I would probably have to quit flying. That's too much investment to take the risk.

Like I said, cheap, simple plane Savage cub
40K hull, no deductible

liability one mill per occurrence
100K per person

Med 10K per person
20K per occurrence

Hey Tommy. I'm at KHAD, little dirt strip north of Casper
I may get out to Alpine this year. Always like that area. Nice to look at big houses I will never live in

Thanks for info. Not everyone at 46U lives in a big house; we live in a townhome. But as my daughter would explain, “We’ve been plane poor all my life!”. LOL Get in touch when u visit.

Re: Insurance vs getting old

Just got my quote to renew. It went down about 10%.The email said I was one of the lucky ones as most policies went up. I haven't talked to the agent yet, but it looks like I got a discount for having the plane hangered which was not on last years policy and I have more tail-wheel time than the previous year. 58 years old on a sport medical right now. Not sure if anything will change when I get back to a 3rd class. Even with the decrease it's still twice as much as the tricycle gear Cessna I sold for the same coverage.

What is a sport medical?
Do you mean BasicMed? Or Sport Pilot?
They are two very different things.

Re: Insurance vs getting old

Sport pilot. I should proof read better. I was only 1/2 cup of coffee in. The options on the application were: FAA medical, Basic Med & Sport.
