Re: iPad aps

I have been watching this thread on and off for some time. I just can't do the size of the Ipad. Rumor has it that Apple might have a 7" version later this year. Jobs opposed it but he's not in charge any more.

I contacted Foreflight on their facebook page and they said they have no plans for an android platform. Wingx android is not comparable to either Foreflight or Wingx's Ipad products. If I don't want to wait, Ifly or a used Garmin seem like the most likely choices. Or paper charts so long as they remain available.

EB,
I was using Avliution on my Droid X. It has a lot of the same features as ForeFlight. I liked it but the company got me an iPad so I switched to ForeFlight. You may want to give it a try.

That's because you weren't at 30,000 feet. You were at 8,000.

Re: iPad aps

Well, the wife is over the hill helping out friends, and the weather is blustery, so I downloaded Foreflight into the iPad and am spending quite a bit of time trying to wrap this technology resistant/retarded petrified old mind around the Foreflight capabilities. Fortunately there are quite a few instructional videos on the net to help download this skill through my thick skull.
So far, all I can say is I am overwhelmed by the capabilities of this thing! WOW! One of my least favorite tasks to accomplish before a significant XC was the 'homework' in preparation for the flight. This App make this task a SNAP. WOW!
I have to do a lot of practice tasks on it to get the skill embedded deep enough to have a chance to stick, so that is what I am doing this weekend. (well, that and monitoring this site).

If anyone is holding back due to reluctance to wade into technology, don't. Between the videos and the Guide and their good intuitive programing, it is very doable!

Ok. If your wondering what I am doing with an iPad in the first place....
Well, It is my wife's iPad.... #-o

With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

Ah. The master of the understatement!
Good dry humor, EB. :)

Re: iPad apps- A-EFIS

Found this last night. I was looking for an app that provides a nice, quality artificial horizon or A-EFIS. I have no kind of vaccum/gyro system of course for the real thing, plus that stuff is heavy!

I figured someone would've had to made a quality product by now that uses all the built in equipment (GPS, accelerometers, etc) without having to have an external "box" that it talks to. I just couldn't stomach the hefty price that Dynon and the like charges for a portable A-EFIS, and upon researching for this thread found out that Dynon is discontinuing production of the D10. Another thing about these portables is they are not certified. Well, neither is my iPhone/iPad

Here is the Dynon D10:

Price: $1,095

Here is the App from Talos Avionics:

A-EFIS

A-EFIS is an Electronic Flight Information System for aircrafts, which runs right on IOS and Android devices, using their its internal gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetometers and GPS sensors.

A-EFIS makes use of digital filtering methods and state-of-the-art stochastic models in order to achieve exceptional accuracy and robustness.

Features:
– Artificial Horizon (AHRS)
– Ground speed (via GPS)
– Altimeter (via GPS)
– Vertical speed (via GPS)
– Turn coordinator
– Slip ball
– Compass
– True course indicator (via GPS)
– Deviation from true track indication

A-EFIS has been extensively tested on ultralights, LSA, general aviation and even airliners.

Hint: To use A-EFIS in an airliner, just sit close to a window (in order for the device to be able to receive the GPS signal), put the device in a stable position and press “AHRS calibration” when the aircraft is in levelled flight. You will practically have the same flight data as the pilots in the cockpit!

Please note that in order for A-EFIS to work correctly, your device must have a 3-axes gyroscope, a 3-axes accelerometer, a 3-axes magnetometer and a GPS receiver. Additionally, in order for A-EFIS to provide correct altitude indication, your device must also have a pressure sensor as well. In the opposite case GPS altitude measurements are used.
