Javelin Tank Install
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?

It's always amusing to see a thread about a Javelin tank pop up... Usually its from a guy who just bought, or is planning on buying a C170.
In the end, they are heavy, rob valuable storage space, and are not a particularly good idea. That said, they do have their place.
In that vein, I thought I'd share the orig install docs. ( I had to split the PDF into two parts as the full PDF was too big)

My old IA mechanic friend installed one in his 55 180. He really didn't use it much so took it out. I wouldn't want to do it because of the hole in the side for the gas cap.

I have a tank, it was on my original "to do" list but now it's slated to be a planter box.

I agree with Greg.....a uniquely bad idea in my opinion. I had a chance to purchase one for my 170. Thought better of it and installed Flint tip tanks....would do so again if I needed more gas.

That Griggs system looks real clean. Those back tanks are fine on wheels and required if you have the 180HP conversion. On floats thats the last place you want more fuel. We put the Flints on a 172 with the 180 conversion on floats and while it worked well and kept the weight ahead it was yikes a bit (lot) scary when turning in rough water with the typical Edo 2000 floats. Had a serious pendulum effect when the tanks were full.

Its for exactly that reason that when required I put a 18 gallon TurtlePac carry in one of the float lockers with a 12 volt transfer pump.

"Required".....by the STC?
Never heard that before.

I just did the Avcon 0-360 A1D STC on my 170B and it doesn't identify any requirement for a "aux" tank to be installed. Additional aux fuel might be useful but not "required".
