Hey Guys - Have any of you flown in there this year? How rough is the strip? Was thinking about flying the Bo in this weekend.

I am thinking of bringing the 210 down. Looked doable, but this will be my first time there. A Pirep on the strip for us nose draggers would be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

I was in there in there with my Maule a couple years ago and If the strip is in similar condition as it was then, it should be doable. I'm sure Matt or someones been in there... Was curious...

Re: La Garita & Hooper, Colorado Fly-In - June 3rd-5th

Last year it was plenty doable in any single. Landing uphill to the west, plan to touch down at the place where the access road to the lodge crosses the runway--it was smooth from that point on. Before the road is visibly rough, good enough for the big tire gang but not so much for stock size tires. Watch your approach speed, and you shouldn't have any difficulty.

You can always call Mike, the manager, if you're concerned about the runway. His number is in Airnav for 5CO6.

Unfortunately, I can't make it this time--airplane is still without an exhaust system; hoping it'll be here this week.

The Rio Grande County Commissioners have agreed to lower the price of fuel at KRCV for the weekend. Now at $4.30 for the La Garita attendees (or anybody else happening through).
As for the roughness of the strip: Clump grass on the eastern half has gotten fairly rough. It all depends on "your" definition of rough I guess. I took the 206 in there last fall and it rattled my teeth. Yes, I would go again, but loaded lightly and I have 8.00's at 25 psi. Past the vegetation break it is very nice, but that only gives you half of the strip.
Also be very careful in the parking area east of the driveway. There are a couple of spots that can eat a nosewheel/prop.

If you look at the diagram, there's still about 2600' past the road--plenty long, especially since you'd be landing uphill (wind permitting, of course). I wouldn't think of putting a trike on the first 800'.

The clump grass has extended itself well past the driveway to the west. Mike needs to do something or it will eventually takeover the entire runway. Even the Carbon Cub fly in attendees were landing well past driveway last fall. Like I said, depends on your definition of rough.

What a tremendous time!!!!!!!!!

The ranch is beautiful, and Mike took great care of us! Makes for an awesome base to go have some flying adventures out of. We also had a small spot landing contest there at the ranch! We did some great back country / off airport flying. I have a few pictures, but none of it really describes how awesome it really was. Met some seriously great people... just a great time!

Thanks to all that made it out to the La Garita and Hooper Fly-in this year. It was great to see all the familiar and new faces. As some of you know... I wasn't able to fly in this year, so I tried to at least make myself useful and capture a few pictures. If you missed this one and would like to attend in the future, check back later at http://www.FlyColorado.org for the upcoming Fall 2016 fly-in dates.
