That will not work in an airplane. You have a hard time with horizon. You need a buble sextant and a nav dome in the plane. A copy of American Practial Navigator by Bowditch would also be handy along with tables and a very accurate time piece.

Here is a download for American Practical Navigator for anyone that wants to be able a true purist

Re: Loran might be a thing of the past.

I like the Loran we have in the Archer, but the data card is so old, the thing is getting to be a pain to use.

I know of a new gov system that is going to come out soon for military use (Yes, I can tell people about it.) It uses a microwave laser up in one of the atmospheric windows around 850GHz and is space based. The DOD is using it for com and spy stuff, but it can lock onto a person with submillimeter resolution, day, night, rain, fog, or under ground in a tunnel. Anyone have a radio telescope I can us to prove it?

Going to be out in public soon, but it still has some big problems with it, as well it is a directed energy weapon. The demo I got was shall we say....interesting. I think it is really un-american, but well I'll let you wonder about that later. The point is that things are going to change big time in the navigation area soon.

I have a 1962 addition of the American Practical Navigator. Still need to aquire a bubble sextant http://cgi.ebay.com/Bendix-WWII-Aircraf ... 20af25dad1 and is there an STC for a navigator bubble for my 182B. Bet Stol 182 could get a field approval.

Re: Loran might be a thing of the past.

Well, the termination date was today. Did anyone fly today and try their LORAN? Did they really kill it? I 'm hoping they'll reverse the decision, but if they don't I'll soon have a hole in my panel I'll need to fill.

I wonder if I send my trusty old 618C into DHS if they'll give me some stimulus bux towards a fancy new GPS... =D>

Say what?? Heck, there's a bunch of used NorthStar M1 lorans on the auction sites . . . asking price about $50. I was figuring on getting one as a back-up. But now I think I'll buy 'em all. If they bring loran back, I'll have a corner on the market. :D

Re: Loran might be a thing of the past.

Went for a short ride yesterday. Poor little loran searched it's heart out for a signal. When I pushed the red flashing warning button it stated; "NOT RECIEVING A SIGNAL AT ALL".
That loran never failed us for over 25 years. I guess it's time for a panel upgrade. I hope I never see the gps flash that signal.
Happy flying
Tom.

Tom Weiss perished in a mid-air collision October 12, 2014. He was an enthusiastic and beloved contributor here for close to 10 years, and he will be missed greatly.

Thanks Tom!

That really sucks. I've been as pleased with my LORAN as you have been. Guess I'll start saving for my GPS now.

Re: Loran might be a thing of the past.

Guess it's time to sell the lorans on the Foreign Ebay sites. Everyone but us is upgrading to Enhanced Loran as a backup so they are still useful, just not here or in Canada. :(

Yep, I've been reading all about how it was shut down yesterday because of Obama's pledge to stop unnecessary spending.

But the articles do point out that we (the american taxpayer) are still funding the Russian and Canadian Loran Programs. [-X [-X [-X

That really helps us, the American taxpayer out.

Keep the Greasy side down!

Re: Loran might be a thing of the past.

Really good CNN article, as are some of the comments. I like this link:

Youtube has videos of the actual shutdown:
