Re: Marble, CO

I was denied landing permission last fall even though I submitted the required paperwork and had been into Marble previously. No reason was given for denial. I ended up camping at North Fork Valley (7V2) after attending the AOPA fly-in in Co Springs.

7V2 rocks, and there is a lot to explore nearby.

Might have been because the Marble owners were having a private shindig, for invitees only. I don't recall exactly when that was, but they were telling others not to show during that weekend.

There was a private event held there that weekend. I wasn't invited either. ;-)

Re: Marble, CO

Tail winds out of the east of even 10 knots generate a large area of sink off the west end of the runway that has caused serious pucker for several pilots when they were unable to climb above 100 feet AGL for several miles downstream (one of them was a 300HP C-185 running perfectly).

Bring your horsepower.

Re: Marble, CO

Actually, my 180 hp Lycoming does OK. The real key at those high DAs is a lighter load, and I'm famous for not following that rule. In fact, one time our mountainmatt greeted me at La Garita with "Cary, how's our favorite glamper?" But as long as you're prepared for that 100-200 fpm climb, it's not bad, as the ground drops away downstream. The really important thing is to get your flying speed before trying to climb out.

I've posted this video previously, taking off from Marble. It pretty much exemplifies what I'm saying. Usual disclaimer--sorry about the poor quality, as I'm no kind of videographer.

I'm based in Glenwood Springs and still haven't been into Marble. Hopefully I will get permission soon. If anyone comes down this way, feel free to give me a call (message). Glenwood fuel is $4.14 right now.

Fly in, fill out a waiver, take off. Susan is the caretaker, she will probably come greet you. Her Email is: [email protected]

I stumbled across that stip while exploring in our rental car on a trip to ASE. Beautiful place. Always wondered what it would take to fly into that field.

Re: Marble, CO

The RAF page is down for Marble which used to have a good amount of info. I just emailed Susan. Assuming I should wait to hear back before landing there? Are there waivers at the airstrip somewhere? Hoping to go Saturday. Its been on my bucket list for a while now.

Re: Marble, CO

If you do go in, there are several videos, including one of mine, which show landing there. Fly a normal pattern beginning with an upwind at about 9000'--don't do a straight in, because you won't see someone coming out. The canyon is plenty wide, so turning from upwind to downwind doesn't require any aerobatics. You'll lose sight of the runway about 2/3 of the way on downwind, so you kind of guess on turning base. But there's plenty of runway, so that even if you touch down a little late, no worries. But if you do decide to go around, do it early--there's not a lot of climb performance when the field elevation is 7800' and the DA can be around 10,000', no matter what you're flying.

Marble is a beautiful place. I hope you're able to go there. Please post how it goes.

Re: Marble, CO

Safety briefing/info down on the RAF website pending new info. It will recommend landing down canyon. Easily done, that is my preferred method. Liability waivers located at the small kiosk amid the Airstream trailers if Susan is not around. Fill it out and leave it there. New owners have been super generous in that respect! FYI: Susan's husband Kurt had major surgery a couple of weeks ago, they may be not able to answer your request.
