Cool! Interested to see how you load your bikes. Mine is a 35 lb freeride/trailbike beast.

What you need is a Bearhawk then:)

You bring up a good point. I've always only done one bike. It can pretty tight without the lower extended baggage (upper only) but it works. It's a lot easier if you pop the rear tire (which I know can be a pain) but can also be accomplished with one seat forward and bike(s) at a diagonal...and patience...and bungee chords  I'll make sure it's going to work before I show up and strand us

Sounds like you need a new extended baggage so you can haul Zane and his bike around! [emoji12]

I'm game for mid week! Actually that usually works best for me, but it looks like I can swing the 23rd too.

I'm also up for a last minute spontaneous trip a lot of times. Sounds like we may need to plan more than one of these trips throughout the season so everyone has a chance to go  Maybe we should keep this thread alive all summer/fall (minus bow hunting season 8) )

How about the next good stretch of sunny weather? May is mostly open for me. Ill keep an eye on the weather and hit you guys up when it looks like the dirt and flying will be good. I agree the trail should be in good shape any time now.

For those who want to plan a date in advance June would likely work out better with the weather. I have no idea when I will be working in June. You guys go ahead, pick a date and I will try to make it.

On many occasions, I carried two full size mountain bikes (front and rear wheels removed) with light camping gear in my old 170. Your 180 should probably fit more and will definitely carry more.

If you ride the road out of Santiam junction airstrip, it is just a short climb and then all down hill to the trail head of the trail. Do the shuttle with the airplanes!

Ken, count Theresa and I in. Would have to bring the Bonanza though, not enough room in the Super Cub for the mountain bikes. Camping out would be fun :D

Sounds great! I'm sure we could get a trail condition report too if any significant weather blows in between now and then. I'll be watching the forcast!

Waterboy wrote:Well looks like there is plenty of interest. I was thinking of May, but its Oregon and May can be iffy for weather. A sunny weekend after a few days to dry out should give us prime dirt. June I will likely be away working and do not yet have a schedule.

How about a try at Saturday May 23rd. Camping and after the ride. I could go mid week but I understand that won't work for most.

I don't think it would be a problem for those who only want to do the lower section to get dropped off there, and the rest to continue to the top.

I can do May 23rd if the WX is cooperative. Anytime after that and I'm going to have to pass until next year due to work.

That's a world class ride. Fantastic scenery. Great single track. I did the shuttle about 5 years ago with a few family members. I was thinking "oh this things going to be easy, it's a shuttle and all down hill." I definitely underestimated the difficulty of the "downhill." While it's not the hardest ride I've done, I'd still give the entire 27 mile "downhill" a 6 out of 10 on the "endurance difficulty scale." There's 1000' of climbing as well... my two teenage nephews eventually had to bail out at about mile 20 and finish on the highway. They weren't regular mountain bikers, and were in average shape. http://mckenzierivertrail.com/how-hard-is-it

Too bad, I can't make the May date. I hope to make a trip up to WA and OR later this summer, maybe in July. If anyone's up for a ride up there later in the summer, it would be good to meet up and ride bikes.

I hear Cessna made the U206 just so we could haul bikes around to backcountry areas. Here's four bikes in the back of my rig with the third row taken out.

4Whitey. When you get to Washington, drop me a line. I'll through the bikes in the -170 and meet you some where and we will ride. I also have sea kayaks and whitewater boats.

Hit me up when you do it. McKenzie Bridge is a twenty minute flight for me, and my June, July and August are pretty open.

Jughead and Scolopax will hit you guys up for sure. That's a nice offer regarding the boats, I'm out of practice on the whitewater, but if I can fit it in, it'd be would be great to do some sea kayaking.

I just camped at McKenzie Bridge... The strip is in good shape. We cycled over the now closed McKenzie Pass road road to Sisters. It's a nice 40 mile ride over.... My buddy left a vehicle in Sisters for the trip back. I want to do the River trail some day also...
