Missing 3 in Idaho

We're missing three in central Idaho this morning.
Took off from McCall headed into the Frank, ELT apparently near Donnelly.

Re: Missing 3 in Idaho

I hope they know where they are looking.

Donnely is close to that upper highway 55 sign.

Specifically the northern end of the Donnely airstrip is JUST under the first 5 in (55)
It runs from there almost down to the lake. Ends just before a road near the beach.

That red symbol is on the first ridge east where you generally switch from .8 to .9 out of McCall.

Re: Missing 3 in Idaho

Not good! I sure hope it turns out ok!
His name eludes me now but I met him last October when I bought my plane in McCall. Super nice guy! Everyone had nothing to say but good things about him and how good a pilot he was. Carried people into back country places for camping and fishing trips.
If the article is right that is.
Hoping for good news!!

Re: Missing 3 in Idaho

I knew the name sounded familiar. I watched this video a few months back. Here's a video tour of the Islander by Dan and Aidan of oddballpilot.com.... He ends the tour with "God bless."

God bless to the 3 souls, their family, friends and rescuers. You're all in our prayers.

Re: Missing 3 in Idaho

I meet Dan this summer in McCall. He brought his grandkids by for a tour of the Skycrane. Real nice guy who seemed to be loving his late in life change of careers.

Rest in Peace Dan,

Here's to following ones dreams.

We will miss him. Two passions in life, flying and skiing. He ran a fine ski shop as well. Gods speed.

God rest his soul.

I flew right over the spot where he crashed just 5 or 6 weeks ago and it's VERY sobering to realize how weather conditions can make a relatively simple mtn pass a death trap. I'm sure he'd flown by that mountain hundreds of times.

Re: Missing 3 in Idaho

I don't think I ever met Dan. It sure sounds like he was a great guy. Sad. We go through this weather thing every winter.

When the wx gets worse than we expect it is hard to give up and turn around. The decision to turn around has to happen fast. Here is an example from AOPA

You will have to cut and paste the whole link.

Re: Missing 3 in Idaho

Whether it's icing beyond the airplane's capabilities as in the link or visibility beyond the pilot's capabilities as apparently happened in this crash, there are times when the decision to retreat has to be made immediately. Any of us who have flown for any length of time have experienced one or the other or both of those situations.

I remember some 40 years ago when I was working on my commercial, another couple, Wife 1, and I were flying from Laramie to Newcastle, WY, in a 172. A rather benign looking rain cloud was above our path with what appeared to be light rain falling. The man asked me what happens if an airplane flies through rain, and I quipped, "It gets wet." Rather than divert around the rain, I elected to show him that it was no big deal. Only, I had never flown through rain before.

From a distance, we could see through the rain. But as soon as it started hitting the windshield, all of a sudden visibility dropped to next to nothing. Good lesson for me. Since that time, I've flown through countless rain and snow showers (mostly while flying IFR), knowing that I'll lose visibility, but also not being in a situation like Mr. Wilson undoubtedly found himself, with rocks on either side and not enough visibility to navigate between them.

Be careful out there.
